My PT, who works in a sports therapy facility, and is also a chiropractor, plus is certified in acuputure, gave me some new (to me) exercises to try this week.

I lie on my stomach, wrap a strap around the foot of my operated leg and pull the strap over my back to flex the knee as much as I can. Next I push against the strap (trying to straighten my leg) as hard as I can and hold it for 10 seconds. Next I release the tension in the strap and pull my leg up as close to my butt as I can. Then I pull the strap tighter and push against the strap again. I repeat this 5 times per session.

When I was at the PT clinic they used the E-stim on my quad and I was to push back against the strap each time it cycled on.

I don't know if it will increase the amount of flexion but my quad muscle sure is feeling the extra stretch.

He also gave me an exercise to help extension. I stand on the operated leg, have a ball in my hands and pivot downward from the hips. I am to keep my back and and non op leg in a straight line. No doubling over at the waist. I'm having more trouble with balance in that one.

Sure hope these give me a few more degrees of movement before my next visit with the OS in early Aug.

Hi Ouch,

I'm 46 weeks post op. My flex has stopped at 105 or 110 depending on who's measuring and 10 extension.

Those are great exercises thanks for posting, I might use some myself. Glad you seem to be doing well. Thanks for a great post ............

Are these exercises only for when your well advanced into your recovery?
Also, do you remember what your ROM was at 3 months?
Thanks.

Hi Ouch,

These exercises are pretty aggressive and are designed to strengthen the quads and hamstring muscles. I'm not sure I could have done the flexion one at 3 months.

I was about 90 degrees flexion and 13 degrees extension at 3 months. Jo suspected that I had poor pain control during the first critical 6 weeks and I agree with her.

Cheers,

My husband is at 8 weeks and measuring 82 ROM. Did you eventually get your knee MUA or just kept working it yourself?

Hey Vern,,sounds like great exercises. But these are very aggressive,if you have never had a pulled quad, calf,or hamstring be careful. Makes sure you do not jerk when you do these, slow slow slow,. Pulled muscles set you way back, sorry to say but I know this all to well.

Good luck Vern, keep pulling and pushing!!

True! Those pulled hamstrings are the worst!!!

Ummm,,they all hurt bad, lol.,, Hey are we suppose to call you donny now?? Sup with the don,,your premo days over? And pardon me for asking,,but what is a don?? lol

Ouch, I never had an MUA. I asked about one at my 3 & 6 month appointments but my OS didn't recommend it for me. I intend to ask again at my 1 yr appointment if I'm not closer to 120 degrees.

I also built my own Rube Goldberg version of a Flexionator, but have found that my knee gets very sore if I push it on that device. Google ERMI Flexionator if you aren't familiar with their device.

Don..... Is the head of a mafia family! I think Jo should feminize it making me a PRIMA DONNA!!! :)That's funny!! Kim asked me the same thing!!! :)

Jo tells me that in Great Britain, a Don is a very learned person....hence that designation for someone who has posted a lot on the forum. I explained that in the US, people automatically associate the term "Don" with the mafia and that it could mean you're a great hit man. She got a good chuckle out of that since that meaning was unknown to her.

So, Judles...just consider this to be the beginning of a new career as a hit mom.

Haha! Jamie!! Really??? That gave me a laugh, too! It looks like that's just another example of how we have butchered the beauty of the Queens English! How appropriate that we will be celebrating our Independence tomorrow!!
Jo....everytime I see the title Don...I'm either thinking of bullets or spaghetti! Enjoy your holiday weekend! Jo! You,too of course!!!:)

Wait til I tell Jay and the kids!!! They, too may get even MORE of a chuckle of the British definition of the word Don!!! :)

Meant you, too, Jamie...all these J's!!!!

Dictionary.com definition .....

4. a person of great importance.
5. (in the English universities) a head, fellow, or tutor of a college.
6. (in the Mafia) a head of a family or syndicate.

So now y'know!

That made my day, Jo! So its like being a prima donna, too!!! :)
