Had PT right after meeting with the OS (to get staples removed). It is conveniently in the same building. I got to do lots of new stuff today. All the exercises the PT had me do to this point were stretches and muscle contractions.

Today he had me start with some sort of sitting machine that had steps that worked like a stair climber. Did that for ten minutes. Next was leg press with only my operated leg. Started with 60 pounds and moved to 75. Did that for 10+ minutes.

After that he put me on a short rolling chair that he attached some ankle weights to and he had me pull myself around the room for a while. That worked the heck out of my hamstrings!

Then I got to get on the recumbent bike for 10 minutes. It felt great! No pain at all.

Last thing was a contraption to electrically stimulate my quads while having me flex the quads each time it cycled. That felt weird but really kind of neat. I'm sure many of you have had that done. I've had a similar thing done to my back before but that was much more painful. Did that for 15 minutes and I was a bit tired.

What a day. Felt great to do some real work. I'm sure I'm going to hurt tomorrow but it will be worth it.

Just felt like sharing :)

Congradulations Scott I am so happy for you. you are really doing well. Conitue and keep posting. I would love to follow it.....Kim

WOW!! You had some workout there, Scott! Sounds like you're going to be doing great!!! Take some Advil! You don't want to wake up in even more pain!!!! :)

Great news Scott - you really are doing well! Sounds like you will be back on that bike in no time at all......! :)

Peta

Thanks, Kim and Peta. I am excited but just realized after sitting for an hour or so that I'm already getting sore!

I to would think you will be sore. That was quite a PT workout on top of your doctor visit!! Time for rest, ice, elevate.....and pain meds.....

But, GREAT JOB!!! So happy for you!

Scott, what a great workout! Glad you shared it. I had my second PT session today and am feeling it too! Think I need to take some pain medicine tonight.

Wow Scott, I got stuck at the 75lb leg press! VERY impressive. I have not gotten past 20 lbs after 6 weeks. It's not that I don't think I can, they just never bumped me up. Hmmm I may have to ask my PT...

You must be soo happy to be moving on up. Isn't it great?

Unbelievably great! I can't remember when I was last sedentary and it felt so good to work muscles and sweat.

I was totally caught off-guard. I expected the same ole stuff. Definitely talk to your PT!

Oh and you too Miss Melissa! I am sure you will be kicking and taking names in no time! You must really enjoy your sessions being an instructor yourself. I was doing some yoga pre surgery because pilates was too much for me. I am so hoping I can take some classes now that I have a new hip!

Sounds like it was a fantastic day for you!! I love the muscle soreness from a good workout and I can't wait until I am able. Keep up the good work.

I got turned loose from PT today (3.5 weeks post-op). The therapist gave me one new exercise, which is side leg extensions from a lying position vs from standing position.

He has had me doing all sorts of weight and resistance work and this was the last big step from his standpoint. He said he was surprised with how far along I've come and he trusts me to do my exercises and not over-extend myself, so he made today my last session.

I'm feeling better every day and I feel it is in no small part to all the types of exercises the therapist has had me performing, at the clinic and at home.

If anyone happens to read this post who hasn't had the surgery yet ... DO THE EXERCISES RELIGIOUSLY! It's amazing how fast the body can recover if you do the right things.

With the exception of the bike, I didn't do ANY of what you just described...

My early PT consisted of squats, knee bends, leg raises, toe raises, heel slides, treadmill followed by ice or heat.

Great news, Scott!!! Hooray!!!

Are your excersises on your web page? I tried to go to your blog but it wont let problems with pop ups. Yeah its my computer it always does that, Ill keep trying if the excersises are on there...........Thanks Kim

I was the same as you Mud.........minus the bike!! My physio just told me to walk as much as possible in addition to the exercises. Might explain why I'm still getting thigh and groin pain??

Kim - They aren't yet, well at least in any discernible format, but I'll do that. I think that's a good idea.

Mud - My therapist adjusted my workouts each time based on what he was seeing with my improvement. Early on the exercises were similar yours.

I was a hard core runner before the surgery (45 miles per week and ran a marathon 6 months ago), so maybe that base has helped me along.

Thank you Scott I just think you have done so so well........The excercises sounds to have done wonders for you............Just let me know if you do post........Kim Ps And keep on going..........Kim

Scott,
Kim's request for your exercises is great. I would be very interested in them myself. The only thing I am able to do right now is the leg press and leg extensions with very little weight. This morning I also did some stiff legged deadlifts because it was the only thing I could think of for my hammies. I was going to try regular dead lifts but there is no way until I can get some strength in my left leg. I appreciate any input you can provide.
