I am 58 years old had polio when I was 2 had to wear a full length brace on my rt. leg. Now my left leg is giving me fits. The Dr. says I need a new knee replacement...which I can understand since it has been doing the whole load since I was 2 yrs. old. But my ? is before you guys had your replacement...was you experiencing pain also in your foot..went to the foot Dr. and she says I have plantar fascia..but I wondering if it's not from my knee being in so much pain (which I hope does relieve it after the surgery)..just wondering....it is also so painful.
Thanks
Jane

Hi Jane Welcome I am 42 yrs old just had mine done about 3 mths ago. I dont recall having pain in my foot, but if you had this problem since you were 2 then I can imagine you had pains everywhere. Now I had the right knee done, but my left hip started hurting because of favoring one for the other so I would think its possible. When is your suregery. If you had that maybe problems with it since 2 my heart goes out to you. You will be real happy that you did this. Post anytime and good luck to you....We will all be glad to help you with anything we can...You surely deserve to be out of that kind of pain........

Hi Jane--Welcome to Bonesmart!
As Kim said, your foot may be strained because you've changed the way you walk or stand due to the knee pain. Be sure that you're wearing shoes with good support to give it as much help as possible.
Blessings,
Irene

Welcome to BoneSmart Jane,
Plantar Fachitis is correctable with rest, and an elastic type band to wear around the foot for support. Many people end up with it for one reason or another. Lots of times it has to do with knee injuries.
That being said, it is correctable. You just will be having to work with that along with the TKR. Will your leg with the polio do OK to support you during recovery? Just wondering.
I had both done at the same time, so I would think it would be fine.
I was 58 when I had both of my knee replaced last year......
When is your surgery?

Welcome, oneleg! So glad you joined us here on BoneSmart!

I can understand that your left knee might be experiencing problems now after all that time of providing your main support. And the plantar fascia makes sense too because you have probably put strain on your foot when walking as well.

Years ago when I was caring for my mother and doing a lot of lifting to transfer her and standing to prepare meals, clean, and help her I also got plantar fascia. One of the best things I was able to do to help it was a stretching exercise. You put your toe up on the wall at baseboard level (heel stays on the floor) and then lean your body towards the wall until you fell the stretch in the bottom of your foot. That stretch won't cure it, but it does help.

Do you plan to go ahead with your knee surgery anyway?

It's still possible to get other conditions even though you have a major one! You had good advice about managing it. If that fails, your doctor could inject the area with some cortisone which will speed the healing.

Welcome to BoneSmart. I move your thread into the knee surgery section as it was in general information!

With the plantar fascia I do wear a brace at night to bed to help stretch it. (Take my leg brace off on my polio leg (rt. leg) then put the other brace on my left leg...just can't seem to get away from braces!!! I will try putting my foot on the base board and see if that helps any. I go and talk to the Dr. on the 28th. to set up the date for the surgery.....I'm still very leery on having the surgery. I had knee surgery done in 2004 on my good leg. They had to take staples out of my knee...I had staples put in my knee about 45 years ago (it was to stop my good leg to quit growing so my bad leg would catch up with it) my bad leg was about 5" shorter than my good leg...which the surgery did help me. But in 2004 a couple of the staples started to back out...the Dr. instead of taking just the 2 staples out he dug out all the 12 staples and I think that is when my knee just got so much worst. The knee is so much weaker than it was before....I can't stand on if but only for a short time and then it really hurts....so you can kind of see why I am very leery about having another knee surgery....but I can't live with the pain the way it is now. So when I go in on the 28th.. I'm going to ask him if that might help my plantar fascia hopefully it does. Thanks so much for all the information....
Jane

I dont really understand about polio. So just a question ..Can they totally replace both, would that make them the same and make them better...IDK just asking...Sounds like you have been thru enough...And should get some kind of relief if they were both new would that help...

On the polio leg.....I don't need a new knee replacement....the leg has been in a brace all it's life....with polio I don't have any muscle in the leg at all and that's why I need to wear the brace to walk with. If you take the brace off I can't walk...the leg is just like a wet dish rag....just limp. It's my good leg that hurts and that's because it's been doing all the work all my life. And it was the good leg that they put the staples in to make it quit growing...so the polio leg could catch up....when I got polio at 2 it didn't grow like the good leg in fact the leg is about 1/2 the size as my good leg is.

Oh I see i forgot them muscles I didnt realize....wow Im so sorry I really hope they can help you get some kind of wakling relief back.....I truley do. I hope you keep us updated..We will all be concerned.....

That's a tough one, oneleg. And having the TKR is going to be tough for you too. But you apparently need it to be done so you, the PTs and the doctors are just going to have to work it out as you go along.

But the fascitis needs to be dealt with now - ask your doctor about an injection of cortisone to speed up the healing. It often works wonders.
