Revision TKR 3+ months LK Revision

Almost 11 months post OP...does the stiffness and swelling ever go away? I am so discouraged...I try to go,about my daily routine, my knee is so stiff, everything I do is difficult...walking is still painful and my knee and ankle are swollen at the end of the day. I have PT 1 time a week and do daily stretching. Surgeon says, that surgery was successful..everything (X ray) looks good....he suggests that I take a couple of Advil for the swelling......would really like some input, if this is or is not a common occurance....thanks
Hey bud. How are you doing now? I’d love to know if you’ve progressed any and how you’re feeling. Hope all is well. Take care.

Hi....I am now 13 months post op...1 yr check up 1/14/21, showed “surgery was successful”, no apparent problems, However, I can only walk 30 min max, my gait is off, before the pain sends me back home. My knee is very stiff. I continue stretching, use the treadmill and recumbent bike at the gym. I have a second opinion scheduled early February. Any thoughts?

Some of us take longer than a year to heal. That might be you, too. Since you are in pain I suggest you stop all these activities until the pain goes away, then start back up with only one extra thing at a time and see how your knee reacts.

Hi..I had left TKR 12/19, difficult recovery and now 10/21, I still have pain and stiffness with every step that I take. I have had 2 second opinions, blood tests, many X-rays, bone scans, physical exams and the Dr’s could not determine any problems.
Yesterday I had appointment with (different surgeon) because right knee now is going to need replacement, I have know this for about 2 years and have done PT and gel shots. But the time for surgery is coming.
After a very brief examination of left TKR, the surgeon said pain and stiffness was due to Flexion and Mid flexion instability??. the only answer was a revision…..I don’t know what to do.
Looked up flexion instability on line, not much information regarding cause?? Any Help/Info would be appreciated.

I've never heard of flexion instability either. It does sound like you do need a revision, but I think even another opinion is warranted. If you get two that say you need a revision then you probably have your answer.

Hi knee replacement members……has anyone been told that they have Flexion and mid Flexion instability? I had left TKR 12/19 and still have pain and stiffness, 3rd opinion Ortho surgeon, said that I need revision surgery to correct this problem. Appreciate any info. Thanks!

@grey j .... this type of instability is something that can occur in some knee patients. It's a complex balancing issue that can require a revision to accurately reposition the implant so the knee functions as it should. If you choose to have a revision, I would consult with a couple more surgeons. You want a VERY experienced revision surgeon who can tell you he has had successes with this type of problem. The reason is there are so many factors that can play into the imbalance, you want someone who knows exactly what to look for and how to deal with what he finds.

In the meantime while you are deciding what to do, I suggest you get an order for some physical therapy. Isometric exercises to strengthen your quad muscles may help. Also, use of a brace might provide some better stability for you. Your surgeon or therapist can guide you toward the proper brace to try, if you want to go that route.

TKR: Revision,
HELP: I am having a TK revision next month 2+ years after TKR due to instability. Is the surgery more difficult, is the recovery longer, what are the results of the second surgery?

Hello, I’m sorry you’re facing a revision and also for any pain it may be causing you currently. I’m wondering if you sought a second opinion and also whether your surgeon is a revision specialist? You do want a surgeon that specializes in revisions.

I wish you comfort and peace of mind while you‘re waiting.

I am so sorry that you have to have a revision. Are you using a revision specialist? It's best that you not use the same doctor for the new surgery, you need one that is experienced with problem knees.

Please let us know how you get along.

I am just finishing up a revision due to infection . My original TKR was in 2018. The revision due to infection is a lot longer and requires 2 surgeries . I had all the original hardware removed on April 19 ,and temporary spacer put in , then went home with a brace and no weight bearing on the surgical leg , as well as a pic line and IV daily for 6 weeks . Then the second surgery involved replacement of the new knee hardware , still having the brace to support the knee staples since it was cut open twice close together to help heal . l am able to put weight on the leg now , boy that feels good after no weight bearing for 3 months . I go back on July 25 to get staples out . As for pain , l feel it was a lot more painful when I had the original TKR . The first revision surgery was worse than this last one and I can say for the past 2 weeks I have almost no pain . I did have a revision specialist .

Hoe much more painful? Do you have any advice on how to bear with it?

I am 7 weeks out from Left knee revision….my knee is very painful still and the step down drugs, that I am taking, don’t touch the pain. I can’t sit for more than 10 minutes, I go from chair to chair, then the only way to get relief is to lie down with my leg on a wedge cushion. PT is very challenging, my knee is also very swollen. It is very discouraging.

Please give us the exact date of your revision.

Are you icing along with your elevating? Most of us have found that ice really helps to reduce the pain. You can also call your doctor and ask for more or different meds. If your surgeon won't prescribe them, ask your GP. Many times they will prescribe pain meds when the surgeon won't.

@grey j , I found I got limited relief from elevating with a wedge after doing my exercises and getting that 'toothache in the knee' feeling. I switched to elevating while lying on the floor with my legs nearly vertical, and my good leg supporting my surgical leg. 30 minutes of that and the toothache feeling goes away.

If you are comfortable getting down onto the floor and getting back up again, maybe give it a try. If the head of your bed is near the wall, you might be able to do it on your bed.

I'm 4 months on leftie, 13 months on rightie, and understand your experiences. Let me know if you find the answers. I like the pins & needles as they are like Tens Machine and means healing, I hear.
I have a nice bed, beautiful wife and just want to sleep with her, lol.
Good luck with your recovery.

this can be from painkillers -- coming off of them. i experienced the same and was told magnesium may help but it did not. it did, however resolve. good luck, it's miserable.
