Natural Anti-inflammatory

Does anyone know if natural products to use as anti- inflammatory that actually work?
Is there a specific brand or product I could get in the U.S.?
I already take Vitamin C, Omega 3’s, Flax Seed but that doesn’t seem to work as an anti- inflammatory for me.

I don't know but will be interested in hearing as I am not allowed to take any do to gastro bleeding.

Well for starters you could try bromelain and also fish oil capsules.

I have been looking into this myself. I have purchased a couple of books on Anti-inflammation Diets. One is written by a local Naturopath and the other is written by a rheumatologist in Florida. The Naturopath prescribes a very strict diet and eliminates foods considered inflammatory and emphasizes natural and organic products with no gluten, beef, pork, alcohol, potatoes, tomatoes, dairy, sugar and a number of other foods. I have dabbled with it but find it hard to stick with because it is so restrictive.
The other book is similar, but less restrictive and has a big emphasis on exercise, meditation, and weight loss as a way to lessen pain from arthritis, especially in weight-bearing joints. It seems more practical to me and I am following many of the recommendations.

The two books I have are: The Anti-Inflammation Diet and Cookbook by Jessica K. Black , ND and Diet for a Pain Free Life by Harris H. McIlwain, MD. I ordered both of them from Amazon.

Does it work? I can't really say. Would I feel worse if I ate differently? I don't know that either, but I think if I can lose weight and eat healthy I certainly can't be doing any damage. I am about 20 lbs from my ideal weight now.

My PT recommended Traumeel. It's an inflammation regulator for muscular pain, sports and repetitive stress injuries and bruises. It's a homeopathic preparation and comes in both a cream and tablets. I've been using both. I got it at a health food type store. I had quite a lot of swelling and bruising (at the bottom of my foot strangely enough - gravity I guess) for the first week after surgery but now (I'm at 4 weeks) I have very little. I'm not sure if it's a result of the Traumeel but it's worth a try and, being homeopathic, can't harm.

Here is the information on bromelain (IMO) you should try.Bromelain can be used in a vast array of medical conditions. It was first introduced in this area in 1957, and works by blocking some proinflammatory metabolites that accelerate and worsen the inflammatory process. It is an anti-inflammatory agent, and so can be used for sports injury, trauma, arthritis, and other kinds of swelling. Its main uses are treatment of athletic injuries, digestive problems, phlebitis, sinusitis, and aiding healing after surgery. Doses of 200 mg have proven to be an efficacious alternative to NSAIDS. I hope this helps.

Rick

Lori, be sure to advise your doctors of any natural or herbal products you are taking in addition to prescription medications. They need to know everything you use.

I am 10 days pre-op and not allowed to take my Motrin anymore because of blood thinning. I was going to take my fish-oil omega 3's, but they also thin the blood, so I am suffering instead.
The paperwork from the doctors office said that Celebrex does not thin the blood.....but I think you need a script for that, I haven't seen it OTC.

Yes, Celebrex requires a prescription. I took it for a while before my knee surgery and it did impact the amount of Warfarin I took, so it is possible it might have a slight thinning effect. But with regular testing, I was easily able to control my blood and the Celebrex really helped with pain.

I am 12 weeks out from PKR and my rheumatologist just put me on Norspan pain patches for pain control due to oestoarthritis and wear and tear in my other joints.
I was not too happy about this so went to the health food store to try and find something natural to try. I was put on Emu oil capsules for the pain and inflammation and Silica gel to help the progression. I have only been on them for three days and it is supposed to take several weeks to start having an effect. I will keep you posted as to the results.
