TKR Nana Moon's Shiny New Second Knee

Good luck for tomorrow's, be interested in what your OS says. I'm due to see my OS tomorrow too - think he might recommend a manipulation!

Hello just a quick note to let you know how today worked out.

The OS has not done and has nothing in his notes about doing the patella and button. Neither me or my husband could understand this. On checking through my discharge letter which I finally found late last night it was not mentioned on there either. However, he did apologise and admit there clearly was some sort of error made whether it was communication or what. Anyway my husband asked him how come at the follow up he assured us that the knee and patella everything was done. Again he said something about surgeons in this country being 60/40 whether they do the patella at the same time. He doesn't. I said but I'd thought the original agreement was that he'd do the patella because of the problems I had with the previous right knee although that ended up as a revision. He had nothing in his records, no recollection of our conversation. He also said that the reason he doesn't do it at the same time was it was another foreign object in the knee and that it can cause further wear and tear? I'm clueless. This has to be done. He's marked it as urgent but I've requested it's done after my weeks July holiday.

So hopefully this will be the last op on my knee(s) ever!

Thanks again all
Love Ann xxx

That must have been very tough to hear that your OS records are so incomplete. I don't know if I could trust that OS again if it were me. I'm sorry that you are facing another surgery.

I know what you mean @newlybionic, I just want it over and done so I can continue to get on with my life. You're right about the surgeon, he was struggling with the computer and paperwork today. He's about due to retire I should think, his registrar will do the op under his supervision.

I'm overtired but can't sleep x

Ann,
I am so sorry to hear your OS messed up big time with your knee cap, he cannot retire soon enough. I feel so bad for you, you have been through enough already. Glad the registrar will be performing the surgery. Sounds like you and your husband need to take notes at your appointments to refer to later.
Hope you can get some sleep,

I really feel 100% that one of the most important part of a procedure is that you trust your surgeon completely...you have to follow your gut feeling, it's usually right,if you have any doubts whatsoever look for another surgeon...good luck!!!

Originally when I had read about registrar I thought they were secretaries that just made appointments. I guess that's the equivalent to a resident which is a doctor undergoing more advanced training within a specialty. Or is it equivalent to a PA ( physician assistant)? I think we need a country to country index so everyone knows what the definite words mean. I also thought a stick was just a small branch that fell off a tree. :rotfl:

Oh Anne, l can't believe just how much your surgeon has messed up! I'd be in pieces if l was having to face another op. You are a very brave lady. Think your OS needs to retire now! So pleased that his registrar is doing the op. You've been through enough and deserve to get on with your life more than ever! Thinking of you

I thought we had a thread like this that @Josephine put together for us, but maybe I'm mis-remembering.
(I always think of college registration and transcripts first when I see registrar.)

Neither.
Registrars are fully qualified doctors who act as the consultant's right hand and do a lot of his work such as ward rounds and clinics. There are two levels of registrar, junior and senior. The senior has to have his 'Fellowship', meaning he has to have passed his exams as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. Nowadays they are referred to as 'Fellows', don't ask me why! But in orthopaedics, that's still not all as they have to undertake a 5+ year training programme to be an orthopaedic surgeon. In this they are affiliated to a central hospital, a major hospital which is a centre of orthopaedic excellence. When they have done their specialist training they can apply for a consultancy in their own right which means they have their own patient base, clinics, beds and so on - and they can have a private practice!
I also thought a stick was just a small branch that fell off a tree.
No, we've always called them walking sticks or sticks for short! It took me quite a while to adjust to the word cane when I started working on BoneSmart! :rotfl:

But I've no intention of creating such an index. If I can adjust, so can everyone else!

@Nana moon 27, Anne, I know we've spoken 'privately' but I just wanted to publicly add my best wishes for yet another operation for you, it seems such terrible bad luck that you have had so much trouble both times. You are so brave and so positive, you deserve for this to be the final treatment, I hope it all goes perfectly for you, Lyn xx

I'm doing ok thank you. Thanks for prayers and well wishes. I really am ok about this now. I'm literally taking it in my stride :heehee: I accept now that this has to be done. I'm losing a bit of rom and getting weird pains down the outside of my knee too. I've overdone the housework in the heat today it was a big mistake. I had to tidy up my craft room too!

@Ellejay @chestnc it's lovely to hear from you, @newlybionic thank you for asking, yes honestly I'm fine how are you doing? X

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, Ann, so sorry you have to go through another surgery. It seems some of us just seem to not be able to stay out the operating room. It's a shame, but hopefully this will be the magic one and you never have to show your knees in surgery again! Do you have a date for it yet?

So sorry to read about all you've been going through!! Hope it all works out for you and you're able to move on
XO susanne
