How did I not think about a shoulder thread!!??!!?? I've had two hip journeys here but did not post once about my shoulder.
June 17, 2022. Headed out for one of my usual bike rides. Out around 9AM before the temperature climbed up to 95F. A quick ride up and over some hills with a gravel trail with no problems. Back on the paved bike path 2 miles from home when....I flew over the handlebars! Front tire slipped and when it regained traction I went over. I was eventually able to lift my right hand back onto the handlebars and ride the 2 miles home then had my son drive me to urgent care. No visible structural damage on x-ray so I got in for an MRI a week later.
Long story short, the supraspinatus, infraspinatus and teres minor were all completely torn off. The subscapularis was hanging on by about 25%. Had to wait a month for surgery. On July 15, 8 anchors were placed to put it all back together again. Started PT a few weeks later mid-August and everything was going well. Or so I thought.
Halfway through October, I still wasn't getting much external ROM. "Oh, that's the last thing to come back plus with the damage you had, it's not surprising." Halfway through November I knew something was off. Another MRI showed that the musculotendinous connection on the infraspinatus had a 3.5 cm full thickness tear. Nothing to do with the original work back in July, a new tear.
December 7, a day that will live in infamy. Superior Capsular reconstruction day, shoulder surgery part deux. Thanks to a donor for a skin graft and 6 more anchors to hold it down, the capsule was stitched back together. Back in PT and moving VERY slow this time. If this doesn't take, it will lead to a replacement. We don't want that!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I haven't been back on the bike obviously but have been on my Peloton for a few rides. I have tentatively circled June 17 for my first real bike ride <fingers crossed>
