Hi All,

I would like to introduce myself. I am a 63 yr male who will be having
BTKR staring Monday the 25th of August. My OS will replace my right knee
at 0730. Then we go back to surgery Thursday @ 1400 and replace the left one.
I have been reading this board since the first of June, when I was trying to make
up my mind to do this. I must say, some of you have me regretting my decision
to do this and some of you have given me the needed courage to get it done. I'll
try and let you know if it was the right one are not, please wish me luck.

Thanks,
Rick

PS: Josephine, you are a very knowledgeable nurse, I just wish you were in the US
and assisting my OS next week I just know that you two ladies would make a great
team.

Re: The Operating List - post your date here so we can keep tabs on you!

Hi Rick,

Welcome to our board. Don't let us discourage you; almost to a person we all say we would do it again, even though the recovery is hard sometimes. I am almost 4 weeks on the other side, now, and I am glad I had it done. It still is pretty darn uncomfortable some of the time, but there is no bone pain anymore. I can walk, get up and down out of chairs, bed, and the car with little to no difficulty.

I wish you the smoothest voyage possible, and will be glad to hear your report from the other side.

Hi Rick,

Welcome to the board. I am 13 days post op and still in the "WHAT HAVE I DONE!" mode. It's no use sugar coating it; the first couple of weeks can be ROUGH. The extreme pain I felt just above the knee and down through the top of the shin is quite a bit better. I'm getting a little more ROM but dreading the PT next week.

However, I am trying to look forward 4 to 6 weeks for better times. One thing is the total dependence you are to other family and/or friends at this stage. I'm not one who would normally be asking someone to bring me a glass of water, an ice pack, a coffee, the newspaper, but right now I'm not up to retrieving those things on my own.

Sorry to be so negative on the eve of your surgery. Just remember that it will hurt and you will be uncomfortable for a time.

All the best to you and your medical team as you embark on this journey.

Vern

I ma not sure how we stand for ice machines in the Uk after surgery, but after reading all the mails on here about there benificial effects I will be making enquiries.
Nervous am I,but needed it is,if I wish to carry on doing what I love.

That is so sweet of you, Rick - what a compliment! But I shall be here along with all the other kneebees to offer support and advice when you come out of hospital.

Nin, last I knew, UK hospitals don't let patients have CPM machines at home.

And the machine of which our American friends speak is the Polar Care Kodiak which looks like this ...

They can get it on Ebay.com but it doesn't seem to be widely available in this country, more's the pity!

However, broken link removed: https://www.dme-direct.com/polar-care-500-breg-polarcare-cold-therapy-unit-system/ has them on special offer for $169 (about £91 including the pads) no idea if they would ship abroad or what shipping would be.

Plus the voltage might be different and something to think about -- 110 vs 220. You would want to check that out before making a purchase.

Many thanks for that info,
My sister-inlaw is the nursing sister on the ward I will go into Josephine so is valiently trying to sort out "the use" of a certain machine for me,as you are right they are not to be taken home really!
Will look into the icing maching and voltages....as it seems a small price to pay for getting the knee back on track a wee bit quicker than using frozen veg packets as doing now......:}......

BTW, I had some info back from the manufacturer of that icing machine ..

Polar care 500 unit: $168.95
WrapOn Knee: (Regular = $58.95, Large and the XL size = $59.95)
TOTAL: $227.90 - $228.90

Shipping: $94.00 with UPS Worldwide Expedited (usually 3-5 days)

GRAND TOTAL: $321.90 - $322.90

Works out to £174.251 GBP which actually isn't too bad and you could always sell it on on Ebay when you've finished with it. That's if your SIL doesn't bag it for use on her ward!
