TKR MoragsMum's Recovery

It turns out there's a two-week wait to see the OS though I could go to his deputy. Maybe the weather will improve by then, fingers crossed!

The next 2 weeks gives you a chance to really rest your knee, ice and elevate it, and give it a chance to heal more. Forget about specific exercises, just do your normal activities of daily living, which will give you what I like to call “natural” PT, as they really do give a young healing knee plenty of movement. Gentle movement is what you want, you are not training for some big athletic event. In many cases, less is more!

@LinaDi About compression stockings, am finding them really helpful at the moment, with cold weather. Also, I read somewhere on BoneSmart (or elsewhere) that there are stockings with long zips up the sides - easier to put on and take off.

Yep I confirm that less is a really good plan - you can then see if it works on that knee. I hope that before you see your surgeon again that you report back with positive news after resting.

Hi. I was exactly where you are a week ago. I went back to my OS who confirmed all was well but urged me to be patient and reduce activity. My biggest issue is continued swelling. While it’s frustrating doing very little, it seems to be working. I just caught myself walking normally down a fairly steep flight of stairs. But I won’t do it again for a while. Or make my usual mistake of rushing back onto the bike, or getting in and out of the car, or obsessively counting steps to prove there‘s progress. Our rebuilt knees seem to work in mysterious ways and it takes us a while to realize we can’t control it. Best of luck with your appointment.

Sounds as if you're doing really well, @Vida , and how lovely that you walked normally down a flight of stairs...I'm still hesitating there. We are certainly primed to achieve, maybe that's the reason we're so intent on progress. Slow and steady wins the race, as they told us in junior school!

My one step stair descending is a habit I don't think I'll be rectifying any time soon, out of posterior knee pain but also, habit.

Hi lovely Smarties – so this is a bit of an Awful Warning. Some weeks after my TKR on Nov 8th 2021 I started losing weight, and found several other cases where this happened after a TKR (cases found by Googling).

A month later I began getting intense stomach pain, and did US, CT, then PET-CT – which discovered a tumour located on my pancreas. Because of its position, on a biliary duct, it was causing pressure and hence the pain. Very lucky, because it seems that pancreatic cancer is usually painless and only noticed when it’s rather late. There are no metastases and lymph glands are clean. So, I’m looking at four rounds of chemo, after which another PET_CT to see if the tumour has shrunk and will be easier to remove in surgery. If not, another four rounds. Whew!

Just wanted to let everyone know that major unexpected weight loss should be checked ASAP (although I’m sure you know this, and in fact so did I, but got distracted by my knee). BTW my knee is behaving perfectly, coming up to five months.

Love to all and quick healing!

Oh… thank goodness you caught it. Will be thinking of you as you go through treatment. Thank you for sharing this important information.

Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry but glad you caught it!

Whew, you are very fortunate to find this tumor before it had spread. Wishing you well as you navigate through all the treatments.
I agree pay attention to unexpected weight loss and get it checked out asap.

Hi @MoragsMum , great thing to keep in mind! Thanks for the tip ... and all the best on your latest challenge! Stay strong!!

Thanks, hawk2go .Recently my knee has taken second place to chemo sessions, but now I have a three-week hiatus from them. Now the replacement has regressed to the "bad old days" just after surgery. Back to icing, elevating.... this afternoon will be visiting a knee specialist to see what he finds in X-rays. Onwards & upwards!

The ortho looked first at my knee, and said it is much better than many 8-month replacements. The x-ray shows that the implant is perfectly in place, which was a huge relief to hear. He ordered a specific blood test that can show if there's an infection anywhere. My conclusion meantime is to get back to stretching exercises every day, not sporadically. Guess they must always be a part of my life.

Motion is lotion for these bionic knees but I know fatigue is a real struggle when going through some of the aggressive cancer therapies. Keep the exercises gentle since you're healing all over now (that energy drain diagram comes to mind).

Thanks for the update and let us know the outcome of the infection test. I wish you the best as you kick cancer's tail parts.

Thanks so much @hawk2go. I will certainly take that energy drain diagram into account! Will let you know re. the blood test.
