Has anyone had a problem with migraine headaches after surgery?

I'm two months post-op (TRHR) and therapy has been hard (I have fibromyalgia) and now I have a 'blow the top of my head off' headache...for the last 7 days. Went to emergency room on Sat. night...they did CT scan (looked okay) and gave me shot of demerol (didn't help) then a shot of dilauted (that worked). I was feeling pretty drunk from the shots, but at least the pain was gone. However, Sunday morning the pain returned and is still here....any thoughts?:sigh:

Im sorry Nana your hurting. Did you have these Migraines before the surgery? Could it be medicine your taking? Sinus problems. I sure hope someone has some ideas....I hope you feel better soon. Enough to worry about with the knee.....

That is really awful. There is someone on here that posted about a mirgraine headache. You might try a search for mirgraine headache in the search portion of this site.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Weather changes!!! High pressure can stress you!!

Bless your heart, I know how bad a plain headache is but a migraine how miserable, I have no answers but I will pray God will touch and heal you.

That's too bad. Do you take magnesium (400 mg divided), calcium, and vitamin D? They could help. There's a practice called EFT in which you tap points on your body like acupuncture which is relaxing and helps get rid of anxiety. You can download the instructions free online, but they take some reading. I learned it at 5 1/2 weeks after surgery when I developed anxiety and it helped some, especially to get to sleep. It reminds me of the Lamaze method of childbirth which I still use if I have to get an injection in my knee or go to the dentist.

I somehow would doubt your migraines are connected to your op but you have my sympathies. It's a rotten condition to have.

I can only offer that for my migraines, I take 2 paracetamol, 30 mgs codeine phosphate and 200mgs ibuprofen. It stops that terrible headache and photophobia but did nothing for that 'totally washout and sleep all day' feeling I always get with migraines.

As a matter of passing interest, St Mary's Paddington, London, ran a migraine clinic for many years. Routine was that people from the surrounding area, office workers and people from the City (financial district -
lots of migraine sufferers in the there!) could pop in when then they had a migraine and get it treated, have a lie down and such. They amassed an enormous amount of data over the years but the only conclusion that they came to in the end was that migraine was different for everybody!

I did have a really horrible worst ever headache with vomiting in March and went to the ER. Ct the whole deal. Anyway my primary prescribed Maxalt-MLT Tab 10mg . I am to take one tablet under the tongue when I get another one. It is not associated with surgery though. I fortuanately have not had to test out this new drug either.
I could not survive one lasting for days on end. I don't know how you are doing it. If it is a migrane this drug I have is supposed to work pretty fast. I would call my primary and get the script. I just carry it with me, it comes in a little case.

I read a post earlier and not sure where, but their pain meds caused
them to have Migraines. You may want to check out your meds.

Our 23 year old daughter gets migraines,I am not sure what she takes now,but she gets them for a few days, and yes she gets sick to her stomach as well. I wish they could find a cure or good medicine for migraines. She is a single parent so it really is hard on her when she gets these nasty headaches. Judy I will mention this drug to Nicole, she can maybe ask her doctor.
Thank you,

I hope it helps Nicole. My spine doc was ready to give it to me also. He told me to ditch the ER and call him instead.

Thank you all very much for the suggestions and well-wishes....they are very much appreciated! I still have the headache.....ugh.

Pat - Thanks for the reminder....before surgery I took magnesium, Vit. D and
calcium, but haven't started taking them again.....good idea to start!
Jo - Thanks for your 'recipe'...sounds impressive....what's paracetamol?
Judy - I'll ask about the Maxalt-MLT Tab, sounds interesting...hope you don't
need to use it, but glad you have it handy just in case.

Saw a neurologist and he gave me a prescription for Topiramate (25 mg) which is generic for Topamax...he says I should take one at bedtime for 1 week and if that doesn't help, increase to 2 at bedtime and see him at end of 2nd week. If one a night works, continue on with that and still see him in two weeks.

He says this is preventative so it may take a while to work and I'll need to take it forever......now that just doesn't thrill me in the least. Since this is the first time I've had this kind of headache and for this long, I don't know why he assumes I'll get more of them....but then I have had an occasional aura-type migraine (pain free) before, so maybe if you're prone to have migraines they'll all return????

We'll see how things go....it does have a list of side effects as long as my arm, but my pharmacist says it's been around quite a while and he has many customers who use it.

Jo, do you know anything about it?:pzld:

My sister in law takes Topamax. She said it gets rid of hers. I hope it does the same for you...Honestly she doesn't have any side effects. Thats just her though. But she has been on it for a few yrs...Good Luck I hope you get relief,....

I forgot to mention....am hoping I can return to PT on Thursday....haven't gone for a week now because of the head pain....am sure I'm falling behind. I'll talk with them again about the head and see how to proceed.
