Hello everyone!
Last time I was on Bone Smart I was talking about my shoulder replacement, and now I'm back to talk knees!
I'm a 24 year old female who was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus at the age of 12. Due to prolonged use of prednisone, I ended up with avascular necrosis in my hips, knees, and shoulders. I had a total right hip replacement in 2011 at the age of 16, a partial left knee replacement in 2016 at the age of 21, and a partial shoulder replacment in 2018 at the age of 23.
My replaced knee continued to cause problems after the surgery. The replacement was originally done to provide stability to the knee as it kept subluxating and dislocating. The replacement fixed this problem and the pain stabilized for a while but has been getting worse again, especially within the last year or so.
I'm currently waiting for an appointment with a new surgeon, as my previous surgeon is no longer practicing due to health issues. I probably waited a bit longer than I should, but she had provided a possible return date and I decided to wait. Unfortunately it doesnt look like she will be coming back (at least anytime soon), so I had my rheumatologist refer me to a new surgeon. So while I wait, I thought I would post here and see if I could get any feedback from those who had to get their replacement redone earlier than expected. How successful was it, was it easier or more difficult than the first time around, etc.
A little more info: it was determined early on I would probably need this redone earlier than normal due to the damage to my knee, and that it would need to be upgraded to a total knee replacement. I have a large hole caused by the AVN that they didn't fix that is most likely causing my problems. The surgeon took a picture for me that I've included in the post. My knee has also been whistling when I bend it - not just cracking, but whistling. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I have a video of it if anyone wants to see/hear it.
Thank you so much for any feedback, advice, etc. that you guys could provide!
