I’m new to the forum and was wondering if anyone has had the meniscus root repair surgery? I was scheduled for a right hip replacement and had to cancel surgery due to the Left knee root tear Injury. I read that root repair surgery requires extensive rehab. If I don’t have the surgery my knee will rapidly become arthritic. I need crutches to walk now because it’s painful. To make matters worse I also need a right knee replacement! This is what happens when you put off surgery for too long! Thanks for any input.

Hello @Tripplefun - and :welome:

I don't personally recall anyone who has recently had a meniscus root repair, but I have found a couple of articles about it.
https://www.healio.com/news/orthope...of-the-surgical-repair-of-meniscal-root-tears
and
https://www.jospt.org/doi/full/10.2519/jospt.2016.6219
This second article does talk about rehab and apparently there are several different approaches to it.

There are some threads on BoneSmart where people have had meniscus root damage and have had it addressed. These links should take you to the appropriate place in each thread:

Thank you for the info. Not sure if this is the correct forum for my issue or if it’s just for TKR. If not I’ll be back with my hip and knee replacement. I was originally scheduled for a knee replacement last year but I cancelled for family responsibilities. Meanwhile my hip was found to have advanced arthritis and the doctor said it’s best to do the hip first. Then my other knee had the root tear! I waited too long so now I’m facing three surgeries! Thanks again!

@Tripplefun I tore my right meniscus last year and did the arthroscopic surgery. My recovery was pretty easy and was back to normal activities in a couple of weeks. About 4 months later I tore the same meniscus and this time I had torn the meniscal root. My doctor said doing an actual root repair was really only advisable for very young patients. And you are correct the rehab is lengthy. So he went in and cleaned up what was left of my knee. A year later my knee pain was so bad and bone on bone I had a PKR on September 17th. If eventually you need a knee replacement I might go directly there. If I would have know I wouldn't have had my second arthroscopy and just done the replacement. Would have saved me a lot of pain.

I‘m definitely on the older side for the root repair surgery! My knee has minimal arthritis and the doctor said any kind of knee replacement isn’t warranted. If I don’t have the surgery it will deteriorate rapidly and then I WILL need a TKR. I need crutches to walk and go upstairs to my bedroom/bathroom and have considerable pain. I’m not thrilled about having the surgery or going through a lengthy recovery but I’ll make a decision soon and I’ll see how it goes!

I suggest a second opinion, or two, before making your decision.

I’m having meniscus root repair on Friday, October 23. I’ll be non weight bearing for about 6 weeks. I’m hoping to have a successful surgeryrecovery.

Best wishes for your surgery.
I have added your name to the October Feisties surgery team thread.
I've also merged your two threads about this surgery.

Had a meniscus root repair yesterday and the surgery was successful. General anesthesia and a nerve block. When I woke up I was in significant pain but the nurses had it under control by the time I left. I’m taking pain meds regularly to try and ease pain. Now I’m resting and hopefully rehab will go well. I’ll be happy just to be able to normal things, not run a marathon! C3302D09-96F5-44DC-9A24-9F1135913E2E.jpeg
