THR Mayhip8's recovery thread

@Mayhip8 I just caught up with your thread and was so excited then so sad about your hip surgery saga.
I'm guessing that this will put you at the top of their will call list!
You sound like you are taking things in stride, good for you! Enjoy Calif., my cousin lives in Malibu.. he posts a lot of video, the ocean waves are so much more than here on the east coast.

@Mayhip8 Swimming! I bet that felt lovely, to be weightless. I used to go swimming when pregnant and the weightlessness of my then cumbersome body felt so good. So glad you feel back to an even keel with your cancellations, and indeed, things do happen for a reason.
Hi @ChrissyW it was fun to go shopping with you. In the real world, I went to 2 shops yesterday looking for a basic fall blazer then had to go home and ice both hips :boohoo:. Gotta get my shopping stamina back. Oh well.
Hey @KarenKat! Good to see you and glad you enjoy the silliness. It helped/ is helping with recovery in our crazy hipster sister way.
@Calgal , amen. You and I share a birthday year and yep I am different too.
Your reflection was so cool to read and it goes to show why I wouldn't trade this age for anything in the grand scheme of things. We bounce back and forth between fantasy and reality with ease on this thread and laugh about it.
For me in my 20s I was anxious about what my reality would be, and had my fantasies for sure. Now I know, and am blessed and content. And bionic.
Mwah, have great rest of the day!
:loveshwr: and :friends:s

Well from one bionic being to all those others. Memories are great but the present is always the best. Xx
Busy week, naff meeting and the end of the day but it's the weekend so time to relaxe, recharge and just chill with the hubby.
Enjoy whatever this evening and the weekend bring. No the real world it's time for a Friday night horror in virtual la la land I think it's time for more champagne and cocktails and then we can find somewhere to boogie the night away and show everyone what bionic hips are capable of when looked after properly! Ooh then it's the glorious burger but it will need to be after midnight as it's Friday and my meat free day!!

Happy Saturday to all tho its probs the end of the day for the UK lovelies.
Beautiful weather with 70s and low humidity, still in the recliner to sleep but last night slept well, I still almost get a panic attack on my back in bed not sure why,, maybe because in the recliner I'm more positioned in and cant roll side to side and just feel more secure, and this new hip is toward my husband and if he'd inadvertently poke my ( newly open to air) ncision I would go through the roof. I still marvel at the fact that I'm only glued together but at the thought of a good whack to my incision I get unglued, haha. Still only 23 days out so I come by it honestly.
Hope all had a good day, look forward to next week, dear @Mayhip8 we are all at the edge of our seat waiting for your call, @ChrissyW full throttle teaching the masses, and @Calgal looking forward to your physical therapy adventures, cant wait to go after my 6 week appointment ---just found out the PT place I want takes my insurance.
Calgal I baked cookies today and put in a CD my daughter made for me with my beloved oldies Mamas and the Papas, Fifth Dimension, Zombies, Peter Frampton, Petula Clark , Beatles, Stones. And guess what! I danced a little around my kitchen! Woohoo--me and my Titanium friends!:egypdance:

@ahipgma I insisted that hubby switch sides with me in bed so my verrrrry tender op side was 'outside' just for that reason! Also hospital PTs said I should have my op side on the outside so as to not be tempted to cross midline getting in or out. My incision was sooooo tender for soooo long I can't imagine the paranoia that would have come every night! In fact it's funny but now that I'm perfectly fine we still haven't switched sides! I like it better as I'm close to the window, ha. Beg him to switch for your own good nights peace!!

Happy Sunday! Hope you all slept well. @ahipgma did you and hubby switch sides? @Mayhip8 is it still looking like the 20th for you? I've got an exciting day today...I'm getting my belated Christmas present experience as I wasn't able to use it when I got it because of the hip before and after the surgery initially. I'm going in a helicopter for a scenic ride. Really excited. I shall let you know how it was but for now my lovelies gave a good day and @ahipgma share those cookies with us all as after our partying I'm hungry!
Did everyone enjoy the yummy, runny burgers? :spin:

@ChrissyW how fabulous! I'm so excited for you! What a fab thing to do:egypdance:
Can't wait to hear all about it :yay:
Happy Sunday indeed
@ahipgma I hope you're getting some comfortable rest in your recliner? I have a lovely mental image of you and your hubby communicating with each other from different rooms at night a bit like the end scene of 'the Walton's ' - when the camera panned out and all you could hear was "night night John boy " et cetera.:heehee:

@Calgal I've thought about changing sides of the bed After the next op too - I know I'll find it difficult because all my kit is on the left side so I am considering whether I should just try and see if a wall of pillows between me and my man would prevent him touching my leg, to be fair I'm so envious of him because as soon as his head touches the pillow at night he's asleep until morning.
So since Friday I've been keeping myself busy as I have had a feeling of having mild anxiety / nervous energy after the cancellation I suppose. On Friday I joined a gym on a weeks pass and have been swimming every day and intend to continue, I love swimming and used to go frequently before my first surgery, I have use of the gym as well and I'm looking at the bikes thinking "I wonder if I can get on one of those ?" - I used to be a keen cyclist so I might have a word with the trainer when I go in later today.
On Friday night me and the children went 'moon chasing ' to find the best spot to take photographs of the full harvest moon - it was fairly successful, yesterday I went out in the morning to watch and take photographs of 'The Tour of Britain cycling stage ' which was fantastic and I did manage to get some good shots.
I'm currently sat in bed watching morning telly having had breakfast in bed,(decadent!) with an ice pack on my shoulder to help this blooming pain!
This afternoon my mother-in-law and niece are coming round so I think I might Take a leaf out of your book @ahipgma and bake some cakes maybe Welsh cakes? . And then later I'm going for another swim
I'm back at work this week and after chatting with my manager it's agreed that I'm going to work from home when I want to as travelling to and from and being at my desk for so many hours increased the pain spasm in my right hip.
( maybe dancing wasn't such a great idea last weekend!!)!
If I feel I need to socialise with my colleagues, so to speak ,I'll get my husband to drop me in and drive me home.

So the operation date is no longer the 20th of September, I had a letter yesterday to say it is going to be Wednesday, the 2nd of October . I suppose I'm still on a cancellation list but it won't be this week as I've got a spot on my leg and the surgeon won't operate until it's healed.

They say everything for a reason and I think the reason might be for me to increase my fitness and to get rid of this trapped nerve by having physio and traction so I can lift myself around afterwards -
Also to be there to support my friend and her daughters as they are having a terribly tough time in their grief in these early days

Well then I better get up and go and start weighing out those ingredients.!

I hope you all have a fabulous Sunday and in our LA world (which ,by the way ,totally amuses my children )

I enjoyed our breakfast at the Tiago coffee bar and kitchen, that extra espresso shot really help me shake off the tiredness after getting in at 05 30 following last night's partying antics!!
Who knew there'd be a welcoming party for the hipster sisters? It was so kind of the 'hipperati' to invite us and slightly witty of them them to have us perform at the Cupcake Cabaret Theatre! An epic performance indeed !
I look forward to our Sunday visit of culture to the Getty centre and then a gentle stroll to pick up those luxuries before we come tonight
:loveshwr::loveshwr::roseshwr::flwrysmile:

Update. Flight cancelled due to poor weather so helicopter can't fly!! Postponed until 13th October so maybe, as that will be close to your next surgery I might ask the pilot to fly over your area and I shall parachute in with some Percy pigs!
All this baking ladies, I do believe I'm the only one who is rubbish at baking but at least with it only being me and hubby that means I don't eat them all (which I do want to when there are fresh baked goods around!) now I want cake with this baking talk. I'll have to make do with a Cereal bar as that us all I have in!
Well ladies I'm popping off now to do a bit of prep work seeing as flying in s beautiful helicopter over glorious Yorkshire countryside IS NOT HAPPENING!

Happy Sunday to my hippy sisters!
@Mayhip8 , God bless you for your fortitude, I would find the rescheduling difficult, mentally, but! I have to say there is noticable soreness in my cane hand and you do use your arms and shoulders quite a bit, especially at first after surgery, so strengthening and healing the arms and shoulders can only be a good thing.
Good grief I've not thought about "the Waltons" almost since it was on TV. Except there is not a a great big bunch of people shouting out, just hub and me.
I'm thinking of a body pillow investment anyway because I saw a photo on how to side sleep using it and I have a week or two before I can attempt it.
I made chocolate chip cookies and toffee almond cookies yesterday.
Our football team is on TV and my mom and brother are coming over to watch it, of course that involves pizza and beer.
In LA there has got to be healthy food so maybe I'm better off there. Many in the US are into "clean" eating which I bet many in California would embrace.
@ChrissyW no I am still in my recliner, I sleep so well there! I truly do think i just feel safer there . So sorry to hear about your helicopter delay! Surely they defer it till the weather is clear and beautiful and you can take beautiful pics.
Our weather continues warm clear and beautiful here.
But I hope we have not tired ourselves out too much performing at the theater, but I thought our chorus line dance with taps from canes and clicking grabbers went over rather well dont you?
Have a restful day, dear ones!

Hello all--
A nice day here in my part of the world weather-wise. This has been a beautiful September.
My daughters mother in law brought a lovely curry and some delicious seafood chowder Saturday just because I had my surgery and so thankful she did!
Late yesterday evening we started smelling natural gas, had a very uneasy night thinking we were going to wake up dead and opened all the windows
Called the gas company first thing in the morning and he came quick and pronounced our stove not usable, gas turned off at the valve so no stove!! No stove , no cooking till the appliance guy gets here to repair.
So a little challenged, but we have our grill and our microwave.
But on top of my poor sleep, the stiffness and some pain, oh well.
Tonight we are going to a viewing of a lady close to my age, she was diagnosed with a form of lymphoma that was resistant to just every chemo and she is gone now. So sad. So the moral of the story is I'm going with Nietzsche and saying what doesnt kill me makes me stronger and that includes sleeping (or not, I think I got 4 hrs last night:bored:)on my back, my pinchy incision, no stove for a while, but hurray! Safe from inhaling natural gas., hope all is well across the pond, @Calgal , @ChrissyW , @Mayhip8 !

Good morning all
@ahipgma! A gas leak? !:scare: Thank goodness you're all ok . I hope the stove gets mended soon .
@ChrissyW how disappointing about your flight being cancelled. :nah:Safety first though!
Well after an exhausting few days I needed A duvet day yesterday! I didn't really sleep the night before at all mainly because of this pain in my shoulder so I decided to rest and recuperate and watch television ,read ,snooze and catch up with restful things. and I really feel the benefit this morning.
I'm off for a swim as soon as the children go to school and then I've got some shopping to do for boring things like food before I come home as I'm at work this evening from home.
I'll pop by later but for the moment wish you all a cheerful Tuesday. And I'm with you Chrissy and ahipgma -the best time to live is today in the moment- there is the saying isn't there " The past is behind you in the future is not guaranteed the best present is today "..or something like that
:loveshwr::roseshwr::loveshwr::friends::friends::flwrysmile:

Glad your shoulder is better, @Mayhip8
Swimming can only help I would think.
Appliance repair guy coming this afternoon so hopefully will have my stove back.
I wanted to wait awhile before giving you an opinion about what you will be going forward with. I wont lie, this time going for my hip I was more apprehensive, because obviously I knew what was what instead of ignorance is bliss.
Honestly the main thing I struggled with is deja vu of pain, not sleeping etc. In the sense that " do I really have to go through all of this AGAIN"-- the emotional end of going thru a major surgery so soon again,
Was just as hard as the physical but!!!
Today I can say---
Blessed that yes, 2 surgeries that each went well from a hospital/ technical/ surgical standpoint. Grateful for my excellent surgeon.
Knowledge was power this time, knew a little better how to do things, pain meds, using walking aids, sleeping in the recliner this time, delaying PT till after I heal more, getting back to the gym.
I was walking around my house today and felt myself walking straighter and with less pain and more confidence--- both hips are DONE. No more grating pain.
My journey was about a 3 year one, from starting to live with more limitations, then trying less invasive stuff, then deciding with my surgeon that surgery was the viable option that was left. At this point I feel that all this has finally taken an upswing, that I can get back to doing what a fairly healthy 63 year old can do!
I wish I could wave a wand and have us be at the same point, but will keep you in my prayers and send all the best healing vibes. I wanted to wait till I could give an honest opinion and not whine and 27 days out I can say WOOHOO!
Excited for you to have both sides healed too!!! Its great.
Love and hugs!

Hello ladies. Nice to hear you're feeling positive. @Mayhip8 glad that shoulder is getting sorted, that arm needs to be good and strong for a) waving Pom poms and b) using our grabbers for around the pool so to say! I've become quite the expert at getting tights on with the old grabber as I'm still following the old 90 degree rule! And you @ahipgma feel proud in how you reflect on where you are and the journey you've been on. Do you know ladies, how good are we, we are genuine wonder women (or maybe bionic women who, rather than bionic hearing or whatever it was she had, have our super duper bionic hips) it's been a long day today as we had open evening so I've been in work 12 hours straight with an extra 45 commuting time so my little legs are now in pjs saying 'chill woman'.:spin:
Sleep well and have a good day tomorrow, making sure you behave yourselves and don't get up to mischief!

@ahipgma Thank you so much for your honest and positive and feedback. :thankyou:
It's hard to believe that nearly a month has gone by since your operation! And I'm so pleased that it has been worthwhile and are starting to see some good results. From what you've posted since the surgery I see you have been really active and have kept in contact with family , friends and socially and I think that is really important to a good positive mental attitude.
That's not without saying that do you not have pain and that it's not difficult trying to get some rest and sleep and to be fair if I wasn't having surgery I think that memory would fade into the background - a bit like the pain of childbirth -you know it's going to be there but once its done You don't remember the actual feeling of pain -just the experience of it if you know what I mean! And then trying to get your head round why would you put yourself through that again? And I think the answer is because the outcome and the difference it's going to make to life after a hip replacement.
It's very difficult to explain to someone just the actual awfulness of the deep aching grating pain and the reduced mobility and the fact you can't move your joints and thats something we've all been I suppose fighting for many years before we came to the decision that we were ready for a new hip. On a bad day I do feel quite down about the pain being constant I wonder if it will ever to go away and on a good day I see how far I and others have come since Joint replacement and remind myself " This too shall pass" and try to distract myself !
I can see an improvement in my shoulder pain and on balance there is no way I would've coped if it had been that bad after surgery -I'm off to the physio shortly and then another swim.
Working from home has helped a lot as it cuts off a good hour or so of my working day and reduced repetitive actions which irritate the nerve- driving etc
@ChrissyW well done for being able to put tights on! I haven't tried it yet ! I can just about put my swimming costume on at home but after my swim have to dry myself down as well as I can still wearing it then put some clothes on over the top and drive home damp as there is no way I can get changed in the changing room
Oh! the very thought of it ! :yikes::shocked:
@Calagal how are you ?
Is anyone sleeping on their tummies again yet? Errant question there!!!
Well my lovelies have a wonderful Wednesday :loveshwr::roseshwr::flwrysmile:

Happy Wednesday!
@Mayhip8 your attitude is so good-- you keep things in perspective so well. Any of us who have had children know what you mean about the pain of childbirth and the pain being worth it to bring a life into the world and the memory does fade. Same with a surgery to better your life!
@ChrissyW are you still being made to follow the 90 degree rule? I quit that on my older hip at 6 weeks. Its wonderful to have the bend after years of not! Tights are the bane of womanhood in my opinion anyway. The stretching of them and the hopping up and down in them to try and make them fit! Still neccessary for professionalism on the job for you I imagine! Thank God for nurses scrubs!
Today is a very special day for me as it was for you earlier Mayhip when you had all the birthday celebrations close together
My hub is 59 today and my mom is 88
Two of my fave people.
We're taking the party to my moms as my stove part hasnt come yet. My mom has had 40 of her birthdays in that house and it's been my dads family home for 70 years. Younger daughter is off today and she will help. So off I go and if I'm a little sore tonight it'll be worth it!
Have a wonderful day!:flwrysmile::flwrysmile::flwrysmile:
