We'll got my surgery date 10/12/2009 for left side hip core decompression and RTHR.Post-op is going to be lots of fun I can almost feel it.:D The wife and 11 year old son are going to probably leave me after the 2nd week LOL.

I'm a 45 year old kid with bilatral AVN(stage 3+).I've been having discomfort with the right hip and no pain with the left. The OS has decided RTHR and core decompression for the left side.I hope and pray that the femur head doesn't break and that the bone regrows inside the head.

More to come later. Thanks for having a forum site bonesmart.org

Well, I wish you the very, very best. You'll be a new woman!

I think you meant "new man",Jo!
What is hip core decompression?
THR will be fine....are you doing an anterior or posterior approach?
Rachel

By the way, I am 43, had hip dysplasia and AVN.....thr 4 months ago....well almost. About to get back on the bike! Doing brilliantly except I have limited range of motion only just getting to 90 degrees at a push! Its annoying, and I still can't put on socks or do up shoelaces....all things come to those who wait.....

oops! Sorry mate!

kanga, you can find the explanation of a core decompression here

Hi V4 Thanks for the explanation Jo, love learning all that new stuff. Good Luck to you on your surgery I wish you the best. I hope you keep us updated on your progress.......:) Ima knee so I just wanted to say hey !!!!!!!!!!

My core decompression surgery is going to be 3 small drill holes instead of 1 big one.I'm not getting any bone graft either. The OS and I are doing this in hopes of delaying the progress of the AVN and better yet even maybe restoring good blood flow to the bone and growing new bone again:thmb:.
The recovery time is about the same the doctor said.He does about 70-100 THR a year but has done only 6-8 core decompressions. The succes rate is low with my stage of AVN but I'm praying for a miracle.
I havn't found much on the internet about core decompression stories just medical reports.

Ah yes! That works too. In my world it's generally just referred to as a drilling. Similar procedures are done elsewhere in the body and seem to work very well. It's actually an old, old procedure so I'm not surprised you can't find anything on the internet. I have some very old surgery text books that describe a similar kind of procedure. A surgeon call broken link removed: https://www.dundee.ac.uk/museum/medical/operation5.htm used it in the knee in the 50s or thereabouts.

I wish you all the best with it.
