Quick question...

My PT told me yesterday that it's Ok to start putting some lotion on the incision -gently rubbing the incision. However, the nurses in the hospital had told me not to put any lotion on it until it's all healed.

I'm at Day 17 right now and the incision is NOT completely healed. (The glue is drying up on the sides and peeling).

Any advice on this?

Glue drying up and peeling is not the same as the wound being healed. Are there any scabs or open bits on the actual incision line?

You really shouldn't need to put any lotions or creams on it anyway - it heals perfectly fine left to itself.

This is what a well healed incision looks like ...

Thanks Josephine. Yes, the incision is not completely healed yet -it does not look like that yet. I will not put any lotion on it and let it heal on it's own. Thanks!

At about week 5 my IT band got really, really tight after working it a little too hard. My PT started doing a few minutes of massage after our sessions, but recommended I go to a professional massage therapist; which I did, someone who knoew about scar tissue.

Not only did I walk out of the place feeling great, but the IT band was noticably loser, and some dryness around the healed incision was soft. I've been using alovera gel or almond butter cream my wife got at the Body Shoppe every few nights to massage the whole area around the incision. I think the massage (both the pro and self administered) has contributed to my overall recovery -- and my smooth butt, but that's a story for another day...

But like Jo, I think you are a little too early in healing to put anything like that on the incision yet. Infection is a concern, and you're doing so well this far, why rock the boat? My massage therapist siad that I "have the best looking zipper she has seen so far" and I didn't put anything on mine until that 5 week point.

Hi Melissa, Don't think I put any lotion on my incision til it was several weeks along. However, my Pt therapist did right away to "pop" the stitches underneath the skin. Felt oddly good and she probably special gel. It was clear and probably had antibotic in it.

When you get the go ahead, have your bf or mother massage area with some good lotion. I found it helped with dryness and to get the circulation going.

Everything should be this easy. Hop! At least
Your incision isn't itchy! That's really annoying!!! :)

Yikes!!!! I meany YOU, Melissa! You are doing great!!!!Keep
It up, Girl!!! :)

Massage therapy! That could be a good way to unknot the upper body and lumbar muscles that feel kinked from not being able to do side-laying, or 90-degree+ stretches.
The only problen is a chair massage would probably break the 90-degree angle rule, and we are not allowed to lay on our stomachs yet either. Bummer!

I watched a lady in rehab today getting a neck massage, I was so jealous!

Hop! Actually, its a perfect day for a stone massage,,,,,with all that
Rumbling thunder here today! :)

Yeah Judles, the lightning was bad too. I sat in my car waiting for it to end because my crutch is metal, and wasn't taking any chances on getting struck by lightning.

Wow!!!! That's for sure, Hop! You better keep a wooden
Cane in the car just in case!!! :)

YoungM- I have been curious about this too. I have always had success with minor cuts and scars using Vitamin E. I plan on using it on my scars after the staples are removed. is that a bad idea? If so, what should I use?
