Is it normal to lose weight with TKR? My husand has lost 13 pounds so far, he doesn't have much of an appitite. He is not doing well; missed P/T yesterday as the pain in his back was so bad. He is seeing the surgeon tomorrow for his 6 week check up. I think he is a little nervous about that too as he is barely at 90, six weeks later.
Oh well, one day at a time.

Yes I lost 19 lbs. Guess we just dont have an appetite. It will come back....Mine is starting to....Hang in there.........Maybe try lil in between meals, snacks....Please let us know what happens at thr Drs office..........You are really a caring person your doing a great job.........................

I lost weight too. I didn't lose much and I've gained it back now that I'm working out again. I think the pain meds suppress the appetite. I also believe, and I could be wrong, that your body works so hard at repairing the damage done by surgery that your metabolism speeds up.

He'll regain that weight. As for his range of motion, I'm at 110 at eight weeks. I'll bet I was only at 90 at six weeks. Don't worry too much. Wait and see what the doctor says.

I'll second what the others have said. It is very common to lose weight after any surgery but it normally will come back as you get farther along in recovery. Let's wait and see what the doctor says, but it just may be that he's satisfied with the 90. Besides, many times it's not the actual number, but the improvement. As long as he is continuing to improve - even little bits at a time - that could be what the surgeon is looking for at this point....especially given his back pain and the way the knee has hurt (swelling).

Hi! I definitely lost weight after my first TKR. I didn't have much of an appetite for quite a while. It was a bit different with the second, and my weight didn't change much. Everyone is different, but it seems that most people do lose some weight.

Six weeks is still very early in recovery. I'm still increasing my ROM after eight weeks, and expect to increase it even more as time goes on.

Hope all goes well at the six week check up. Do post and let us know the outcome.

I lost thirty pounds in the two months following my TKR. I've leveled off now and don't seem to be losing any (or if I am, its so little that I'm not paying attention).

My appetite is lower too. I still eat all the same things, just less of them.

I hope your husband feels better soon.

Well, we just came back from his 6 week check up. He was only at 80. Doctor said normally he would put him back in the hospital and do the manipulation, but given his back problem, he would be afraid he would be in the same boat after the procedure. He advised that we go back to the back surgeon (which I had already made an appointment for) and gave him another 3 weeks to see his ROM. He was very nice about it, not like the first visit. Very disappointing, but we'll cope.

Aw I m sorry , just do what is says atleast he has a plan..Glad he was nice to you all this time....Tell him hang in there I had a manilpulation, it wasnt scary and best thing Ive done. Lil sore for a few days thats all. When do you see his back surgeon. If you dont mind?

Awww, Ouch....I'm so sorry the report wasn't better. But, I'm VERY happy that the surgeon was more understanding this time and that he gave you a plan of action. So we'll be waiting to hear what the back surgeon says. Stay with your mantra....take it one day at a time. Both of you guys are such troopers.

They can definitely do the MAU at ten weeks and even beyond. It is very normal to lose weight, the appetite just isn't there. Even after 11 months I still am not able to eat much at one time, and I still don't want too much meat. I'm not complaining, though--it's actually not a bad thing. I think being "off my feed" for awhile reset my body's perception of portion size, and most Americans eat awfully large portions these days.

Back surgeon appt. is next Wednesday. Can they still do a manipulation at 10 weeks?

They can do it any time. Success might vary the longer they wait but successful MUAs have been done as late as 6 months or more.

Ouch

Glad to hear he had a nicer visit with his doctor.

I think he is still improving on the rom. He is now at
80. Also as I found out, PT's and doctors all measure
different so I would not worry about it.

I do hope he gets his spine fixed though. It might make it easier on his knee.

Hope his pain goes away soon.
