Hi All

As many of you know I am going for new hips June 30 and Aug. 11. But I started as a person with bad knees. I have had 5 arthoscopic knee surgeries. None have worked. After the last one, the surgeon realized that all this time the problem with my knees has been my hips. Evidently my hips have degenerated over the last 10-20 years and do not move anymore. So both my surgeon and the second opinion feel that the problem with my knees is my hips make them so crooked and I walk kinda sideways on them.

Last night for example I went to Walmart and rode in the driving scooter and while on it my knee "popped out" like it always does. I had to practically lay over a shopping buggy to get to the vehicle they pulled right up outside. Once home I had to use the wheelchair and then crutches to get in the house. It took me 3 hours to get it to go back in. It was so painful. Now I am back on crutches for a day or so til I can go without again.

Now I am optimistic that two surgeons know what they are talking about. I was just wondering if anyone on here has been through a similar experience. My hips only hurt now if i stand for long periods of time. I thought that was my lower back hurting. (More like the top of my bottom) My knees hurt so bad.

I hate being this miserable and I am scared of going through 2 major surgeries and still being in so much pain.

Any thought on this? I just love you guys and your wisdom and experience!

Y'know what? I would be very sceptical of the opinion of a surgeon who had carried out all that work with little or no improvement and then decides he's been treating the wrong joints!

Who was the second opinion surgeon and how did you learn about him? Was he a friend or colleague of your current OS, or did you find him yourself? True second opinions should have no connection to the original medic otherwise you'll find no truly honest opinion.

Nevertheless, if you have bad hips AND knees your recovery from which ever is done first will be problematic, to be honest. Can't think of anything less painfully straight forward than that to say but ultimately, the pain will improve and you'll get some relief.

On our local news a couple of days ago, there was a lady who had had both hips, knees, shoulders and even an elbow and a finger joint replaced! There were calling her the original bionic woman! But her surgeon (one I worked with!) did say she was the most courageous patient he had met in a long time.

My current surgeon only did the last knee surgery. And there were two tears in the miniscus. So he did what he should. The second opinion doctor was recommended by my primary physician who didn't believe I needed hip replacent. (He did change his mind after I showed him my exray)

The other surgeons went in after seeing nothing wrong in tests to see if there was something they didn't see. One even tried twice to fix it. #4 sent me away after I complained I was still miserable and said there was nothing he could do.

Boy, you've got that right Jo. My hip's killing me since my knee replacement on Monday. I hope the pain decreases once I return to the antiflams and I'm up walking more! I really want to put off the next joint replacement for at least another year or two. I should say I'm praying.....

Then have your physician send you to a 5th and a 6th if needs be until you find someone who is prepared to take your situation seriously and treat you with some compassion. Don't let them have the last say on this. YOU're the one who has to live with it!

I am thrilled with my current surgeon. He is the first person who looked past my knees to figure out what was really wrong. And after that I got 2 more opinions. When my surgeon told me I needed two hips he wcotted over in his chair and held my hand. He felt aweful that no one had noticed that it was my hips.

I don't doubt what needs to be done after seeing the XRay. I was just hoping there was someone else who was going through or had went through this.

Eeyore, I wish you the best of luck in getting this all figured out. I can relate. It seems I fix one problem and then the next joint starts acting up. I know that I need a lot replaced but I would be more then happy if the remaining would be nice and cooperate for a while so I wouldn't have to get them replaced as soon as the prior one is healed. You know, maybe have a semi-normal life for a couple years in between?

Hang in there and like Jo said....Make sure you've got the right surgeon that's diagnosing you correctly. Karen

Eeyore, prior to my recent hippie status, I've had 5 knee surgeries. A knee that 'pops out" and stays out as long as you described is a problem in and of itself, no matter the causal relationship to your hip issues.

I am going to my surgeon today to check out my knee. It has been giving out on me in pt for my hip and now hurts when I am walking up or down hill. The pt said it would not be related to the hip surgery.

hi Eeyore,
I too had three arthroscopic knee surgeries...two for repairing a barely torn miniscus and the last one was a lateral release because my patella was not tracking right! None of them relieved my pain in my knee or thigh. Finally a doctor at Mayo Clinic looked at my hips and lo and behold, my hip on that leg was shot totally....bone on bone, four major spurs and it was turned totally out of place. Never did I have severe hip pain...only knee and leg pain.
BUT it has been fixed with a THR and a shoe lift on my other foot. No longer any pain and no problems with my knee not tracking properly any more. So glad you found the right doctor too! Hip problems cause knee and leg problems since they are all connected from the hip!

As it's often said in political circles "everthing's connected to everything else"! Not an unfamiliar story there, VirgoC.
