Hi every 1, I am now 3 weeks after my TNR. The knee itself seems to be doing just fine. I have been doing everything I believe im supposed to except may miss some exercises. I do ice alot also. My leg seems to be swelled up so much and not going down. My calf , my thigh both are swelled up. Is the swelling this long after the operation normal? help

Hi and welcome. You need to make sure you elevate your leg above your heart and lotz of ice.

Did you call your OS? You need to call him/she. Knee swelling is
normal and it depends on how much exercise you are doing for PT.
Some folks do way too much and it causes the swelling.

The thigh being that swollen and not going down is another story.

You need to call the OS

Keep postin and let us know

Welcome. I think it is normal. Mine stayed swollen for awhile and even does now... Weeks is early.............If it is bothering you though just to make sure give your OS a call..........And yep still ice nd elevate also take some anti inflammatories that would help.Good luck....Post anytime............:)

Hi JoeP and welcome,
The swelling is normal. I'm 5 weeks out tomorrow and I have some swelling when I'm up too much. My swelling is in my knees and feet. I don't have any in my thighs. Are you taking an anti-inflammatory? Make sure you ice a lot. When I got home from the hospital, I iced every hour for 20 minutes then I cut it back to every 2 hours for 20 minutes. Make sure you elevate also. Also, do not skip on the exercises! I know it hurts but that's the only way you are going to get better.

Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.
I actually carry bags of peas with me where ever I go...I know it looks weird...don't care.

joeP......call your OS.......better being safe than sorry!!! ((:0)

Swelling after this surgery is normal and can last months. However, the degree of swelling is the issue. Like Pat said, get those feet up and for goodish periods of time. And putting them on a foot stool is not good, you need them up like this

[Bonesmart.org] leg swelling

if you can sleep like this, so much the better.

Another cause is pain. Pain causes swelling and swelling causes pain. It's a really nice little vicious circle. So make sure you are taking enough pain killers, ok?
