I am new here and so glad I found you. I am 55 years old and have always been very active. Started having leg pain three years ago, mostly in my knee and thigh.

Want everyone to know IF you have leg pain, especially in the knee and thigh and they can't find anything major wrong in your knee ...it is probably your hip!!! It took over two years for anyone to even look at my hip to diagnose my leg problems. My first two ortho docs made me feel like a hypochondriac. I did not have severe pain in my hip, just down my leg and in my knee.b

I did not walk on the left leg becaue of acute pain in entire leg for almost a year prior to hip surgery!!! For three years the doctors kept focussing on my knee and ankle. Had three arthroscopic knee surgeries...wo meniscus trims, one lateral release to realign my patella, then a chipped talus bone in my ankle operated on in February. Non weight bearing for two months after that one. Still unable to walk without pain in leg. Finally went to Mayo Clinic and they told me it was my hip!!!!!

I was beginning to get down thinking it would never be fixed, but now realize the hip was the source of my leg problems in my knee and probably ankle. My hip was turned and bone on bone doc said and four major bone spurs removed. Now Hip is great. Am two months post hip replacement and using a cane and knee working fine, bh ankle feels normal! Just have to build back the muscles and that will take a long time. Daily workouts and swimming. Thank you for all your posts. I'm so glad I finally got to the bottom of my leg problems. Recovery is slow though but I'm gettin there!!!!

Re: Dealing with your Recovery time.

Hi all,
It is imperative that we all realize our recoveries are individual and all going to be different. I was getting down reading about folks up and hiking after 4-6 weeks and I'm 8 weeks post op and still limping with a cane.

Each surgery is different and our hips all have various problems to fix. I now realize my recovery is a bit slower due to the repairs I had to have done which were quite extensive. Also the damage prior to surgery makes a big difference in recovery time (muscle atrophy) not to mention our ages and activity levels prior to surgery.

So I've learned to not compare my recovery to anyone else's. My body is healing at it's own pace and I need not compare to anyone else's recovery.
We are all individual and the main thing to remember is we are healing as time goes on and we each must be patient with our own bodies. My mantra is "BE PATIENT and KEEP EXERCISING!" It will come. Can't wait to walk my dogs again in the hills and along the lake!!!

I kknow at times I can be very impatient with myself. All the patience in the world for others!!
I went on my first hike yesterday at 12 weeks post op. You will get there too. i posted when I was desperate to walk my 15 pound dog as I did not know how to possibly pick up his droppings!! Seemed like an impossible task. Now it is no big deal.
Yesterday's hike tired out the doggie!! I am up and he is still sleeping on my bed.
Keep exercising. I started swimming at around 5 weeks and it really helped with stamina. My first day a 90 year old lady swimming beat me every lap.
She was my motiviation to keep going.

Hey Virgo,
Saw your post and had to respond...How about 5 years of pain in the left leg, thigh, groin and knee also. I have Scoliosis in the lower and upper spine so they always attributed it to that. I ended up on my own going to Dallas to UT SOUTHWESTERN to their SPINE CLINIC...Low and behold the Doctor asked if I had ever had a Hip X-Ray...I laughed in her face. 50 years old and my hip. Well, it too was bone on bone. Had my hip replaced in late Feb. It has almost been 7 months and I am doing o.k. Have some other issues but all in all I am glad I had it done. I also have an arthritic right hip and we will address that at the end of the year. Hope you continue to do well...Patty
