THR Layla's Recovery

Thank you for your thoughtfulness and kindness @Lucky man and my bud @Mojo333
Such an abundance of wonderful people on the forum. I'm still in awe of our ability to communicate with so many, near and far. People we'll never lay eyes on, or meet, but we share a common bond. I'm truly thankful for BoneSmart and the opportunity to have connected with you both! Many blessings to each of you going forward.

Glad @ BeBe asked the question. I was dying to know what happened to the bra! ............and why exactly they'd hung on to it for almost a year! :rofsign:

Wondering if anyone has set off a security alarm upon entering or exiting a store?
Yesterday I walked into a store, shopped, purchased, walked out. BEEP BEEP BEEP.
 Embarrassed  Walked over to the register opened my bag and the cashier looked at me and said
"No worries, you're good". I walked out the door BEEP BEEP BEEP  I stopped in my tracks and she waved me off so I left.

I walked into the store next door. While shopping something suddenly hit me. Was it my prosthetic setting off the alarm? I have to add that on two other ocassions I wondered about this. It was in a busier store where multiple people can be passing through the door at the same time, Like a Target type store. I heard the BEEP BEEP BEEP and thought both times. It's not me, I didn't steal anything :heehee: After yesterday, I'm wondering if it was me?

After leaving the second store without setting anything off. I went back to Ulta, the first store I was in. I walked in without setting off the alarm. The store was dead and I thought it a perfect time to get to the bottom of this since I was now wondering if my prosthetic is the problem. I explained it all to the cashier and we laughed as I told her I wanted to leave my purse and bag at the counter and walk through the security area. She reminded me that it DIDN'T beep upon me walking into the store for my return visit. So with purse and bag left on store counter. I walked out and back in. It never beeped. Picked up my stuff to leave and walked through.....BEEP BEEP BEEP! Basically it beeped only when I had my purse, but not each time?????? Anyone experience this aside from airport security? Maddening as I don't want to worry about setting off an alarm every time I enter or exit a store. I must have a bad one (prosthetic) I want a refund :rotfl: NOT a replacement, just a refund.

Theft detectors in stores are not metal detectors, so they would not detect your metal implant. Think about how many metal objects are sold in stores. Not too mention the carts you use to haul merchandise around the store and out to your vehicle.

Theft detectors sense radio waves emitted by tags in or on the merchandise. Were you carrying a cell phone or iPad or anything like that? It's common for the radio wave emissions from those sorts of devices or even from remote controls to lock or start your car to set off theft detectors in stores.

Thanks, Alex.
Puzzling though. Yes, I do carry my cell phone and car remote each and every time I enter any store.
So I'm wondering why that wouldn't happen to me each time I passed through one of those detectors?

Possibly some detectors are more sensitive than others? The store was Ulta, a beauty supply store, so now I'm wondering if they are able to set the detectors to different sensitivitity levels? All they sell is hair, makeup and beauty supplies, of which most are small enough to be stuffed into a handbag. Therefore a more sensitive detector?
I'm Clueless? :what:

Yes, some detectors are more sensitive than others. They are also set at different wavelengths. You happened to walk through a detector that was set at the particular wavelength of your particular electronic device. It sounds like the people working there are used to false alarms and aren't bothered by them. It probably happens all the time there.

The cashier didn't mention the frequency of their alarm activating but she did mention that someone who works there has a hip replacement and sets off something when she uses the store restroom. I didn't understand what she meant and didn't ask because I avoid store restrooms. :eeeuw: And I didn't care :nah:

I wouldn't expect a cashier to know much about the details of a store's theft deterrent system. It's not exactly part of her job description.

My hubby kept setting off alarms for no apparent reason until we discovered a small metallic security sticker in the wallet I’d bought him 6 months before- and yes I had bought it! Since a friendly shopkeeper showed us it and removed the offending sticker he’s had no further trouble. Hope you’re having a good day.

Hi @gilleycat
Thanks for mentioning that! I did get a new wallet within the last 6 months.
I'm going to empty it and see if there is something tucked away in a corner. Given these store security
alarms can be set at different frequencies or sensitivities would explain why these instances are sporadic.
Hope you're doing well. Wishing you a great rest of the week!

@Layla Happy 11-month anniversary! I see you have been shopping, so I guess that means you have fully recovered?

All is well with me. Just checking up on you.

Hi @dougie0216
It's always so nice to hear from you! Brings me back to the early days of recovery
when I always wondered how could I possibly ever catch up to this guy (you). I still haven't, and never will! :heehee:

Happy One Year Anniversary on good old hip # 2 :yay:

I read your update and it sounds like you're doing well. No surprise though. I hope your wife's shoulder is
getting better. Hopefully you two are done replacing body parts and can just continue to enjoy life.
I fear there will be a second THR in my future but hopefully not anytime soon.

Best of luck with your ride on Saturday and your bigger races in July and August. Please let us know how you do.
Until then....take care and stay safe on that bike.

@Layla Unfortunately, wifey went to her eye checkup last week and her optometrist sent her to a specialist. She will have laser surgery for a cataract in one eye next week, and the other one the following week. Just as we thought the coast was clear, sigh.

How are you doing?

I'm sorry! Your poor wife. This getting old biz can be a bummer at times.

I'm doing well, thanks for asking. Getting ready for Summer after a very long Winter
this year. Last week we jumped from Winter right into Summer with high humidity
and higher than normal temps. Mainly 90's and even 100 a few days ago. Normal July weather.

Getting ready to watch my 10 yr old granddaughter all Summer while she's on vacation. The best part
is we'll actually be able to do things together. Last Summer I was in recovery so we couldn't do much and the Summer before was pain and limping so we didn't do much. We're going to make a calendar and plan some stuff. I'm looking forward to it. It should be fun!

Best wishes to your wife on the cataract surgery. Prayers all goes well for her.
@dougie0216

Granddaughters are the best. We had to have 2 grandsons 1st. I mean we love them too, but She IS a lot more fun. I suspect ADHD which means she and I speak the same language, lol.

We had two or three weeks of spring and went right to summer. Yesterday was 101F/38C with a heat index of 108! Ugh!

I am so glad you are doing well, and that we get to enjoy our family things again!!

Enjoy it to the fullest:happydance:

@Layla - Happy Hipaversary eve! Almost a year ago you were on the other end and receiving advice to calm your nerves and help you through surgery. Look at how far you recovered since last year and, more importantly, how many other people you have helped and positively impacted by providing your gracious and thoughtful support!
Thank you and congrats on year 1!

Thanks @dapplega for your kind words. You're so thoughtful.
Thinking back is bittersweet. I know you can relate those the pre-op feelings.
A year later, I'm grateful and thankful. It's been a journey.
You're not far behind...
Thanks again for stopping by!

Just one more glorious day without hip pain @Bone-obo will be enough for me!
No clowns, ponies or naps. Maybe a nice walk instead :walking:
You're coming up on your One Month Anniversary.
You and wifey can celebrate on Friday....Yay!
Hopefully without any mishaps you'll be miles away from the ODIC by then. :bicycle2:

Hey Lalya....
I also have a "little song" for YOU....but you have to wait till' tomorrow (teehee) ~ you're actually anniversary : )
Big Hugs ~

Oh and BTW....you have a 10 yr. old grandchild....you barely look old enough to have a child that old:wink:
