Well today was the last of his regular P/T. His ROM was 88. Has anyone else had that low of a ROM at 8 weeks?
He goes to back surgeon tomorrow for a nerve conduction velocity test (whatever that is), then to the OS at 1:30. He is very nervous as the OS wanted him at 90. If only the OS could relate more to his back problems, but as he explained to us, he deals in knees, not backs! I'll let you know how he does tomorrow. Wish us luck.

Hey Ouch!!I dont know why that Dr. cant understand that makes no sense to me....Tell just do the best he can. Thats all he can do....Maybe he can give that 90 he needs make sure you put oil or lotion something on his knee It will help him bend better. Wont be so dry. Good luck please keep us posted...You are both in my prayers...

Ouch,
How BLANKY BLANKY can a OS be?? He sound so uncaring!!! How can he say I only do knees??? And right now from all that you have posted he was not even nice about the knee!!!! Ouch please unless your Hubby is a Big Baby (which only you would know) Find another Doctor!!! I know how my Mother suffered with her back sugery. It was terrible!!! And my Mom was sick all the time. But this time she hurt!! and you could see it in her face!!! So I ask you can you see the Hurt, Pain and Fear in your Husbands face?? Please if you say yes, Then please do not let him feel like noone cares do not let THAT Doctor make him feel like a failure. No one should hold that power!!! And remember what my "Daughter told me, Mom Remember a Doctor is like a waitress you are paying them for a service and if the service is bad then tell them!!!!"

Remember Ouch

Ouch,

Please tell your husband, not to be anxious.

I went in for my 3 month check up this week knowing I was stuck at 80 flex and 10 ext. I was expecting a lecture, however my OS, Dr. K was very kind and asked if I wanted to continue to try or if I felt I was stuck. He knew my history and injury to the other knee, so he was understanding. Took time to review my options and offered how he could best help. Wasn't even too upset, even chuckled when I inquired about his experience with MUAs. Really was a better visit that I was expecting.

Fear of the unknown and failure can cripple us. Although his dr. may not specialize in backs, he is still an Orthopedic Surgeon and understands the injury even if he can't fix it.

Make a list of questions you both want to ask and make sure the OS takes time to answer them to your satisfaction. That is what we pay them for.

I even followed mine out of the exam room and he showed me the x-rays and explained them to me, then printed them out to give me a copy to keep.

Because of this site, I was able to ask informed questions and make wise choices. I didn't feel intimidated by his degree. Communication and confidence is the key.

Hope you both have a peaceful, painfree nights rest and a great follow-up visit. I will be praying for you both.

Blessings,

Actually there is a difference in skills and knowledge between specialists, a big difference. That's why they are specialists! These specialist areas are fast moving and sometimes it's all a chap can do to keep track of his own subject, never mind the details of other areas.

Of course, they have trained as basic doctors, done basic training and understand the basics of anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, all that stuff. But a knee surgeon knowing enough about spines to be useful? Or vice versa? I wouldn't bet on it!

Ahh
So a Specialist is may have his bad behavior excussed then?? He does not need to know everything to show alittle compassion does he?

That's what you call awful bedside manner, right, Calling???? These doctors see patients every day, all Ouch wants is compassion and more understanding! Who wouldn't when your spouse/loved one is in pain????

This has been going on for so long with them. My heart goes out. I know she is getting frustrated well they both are..Its just sad !!!

Agreed but that wasn't the issue I was addressing. Calling was enraged because a surgeon said he only did knees. I was merely pointing out that he had a point albeit he could have put it a little more nicely. But he was right - most specialist surgeons cannot comment or offer an opinion on another speciality. He would know nothing about it. Capish?

Kinda, sorta, Jo!!! It's NOT what they say, it's HOW they say it! That's what Calling is addressing!

Ouch, he has done the best he can. Looking back serves no purpose. When you go to the appointment, the doctor will evaluate him and the focus should be on where you go from here. Make sure the doctor gives you options for what you could do at this point.

Ouch--
IMO Jamie has an excellent point. You will not change the dr's personality but if you still think he is a good surgeon and you value his opinion, try to put personality aside and find out what needs to be done for hubby to have the best outcome possible. There may be several options and one may well be getting a second opinion. You guys need to find out what those options are--that's why you're paying this doctor--for the information so that you can make an informed choice.
Blessings to you both,
Irene

Jo,
Sorry I was not mad at just what he said about only doing knee's. He was also very short with Ouch's Hubby when he first did the knee. Then when they went back for the first check up after surgery Ouch said he was nicer like a different person. Now he is back to being uncaring. You do not have to understand Backs (but I am sure he could find out what Ouch's Hubby has been through if he wanted to.) I am just sayin that he needs to be KIND to the people that put food on his table, gas in his car and So On. It will not hurt anyone to show a little concern for a fellow human being.(Not even a OS)
Thats all Jo I am not mad OR as you said "ENRAGED" Jo I have never been enraged in my life but, I have had People who think they are GOD's Gift to the World talk down to me. And I do not think that just because they are a Surgeon they have that right to be unkind. I think that does not fit with "do no harm"
I just Care!! Jo about how some people feel when they are talked to like this Man talks to people. God is watching and what goes around will come back around.
And it really hurts me badly that you called me enraged it cuts me too the bone.

Well, the news wasnt great. Went for the nerve test on his back this morning. Then went to the OS. He measured 82 in the office and -8. Worse than what the P/T measured. The OS said he has made no progress whatsoever in the two weeks he saw him last. But, surprisingly, he wasn't too upset because of the issues with his back. He gave him another month to try and increase his ROM. He goes for the MRI Monday for his back and then back to the surgeon on Wednesday for the results.
The OS also gave him another prescription for P/T. I am taking the advice of someone on the forum and going to a more professional P/T this time around. I am going to hold off for 3-4 days before starting back up on P/T (will continue to do exercises at home) to see what the back surgeon has to say from the results of the MRI.
You wonder though, is it still important to continue with the P/T if in a month he does the MUA anyway?

Ouch,
So glad to hear the day is over for you. I must have been a long day for both of you. I am glad the OS was nice today. I pray the the MRI shows what is going on with his back and it can be addressed. This is a long hard road for you both. I will pray that your Husband starts to see the light at the end of this long tunnel.

Ouch
I feel for you and your husband as I am in the same type of boat!!! I had my thoracic fusion surgery in Jan. but it has not solved my pain problem. I have asked my surgeon to send me for discography on my bulging thoracic disks. I will have that on July 14th. It is not a pleasant test, but should give info as to whether these discs are producing my symptoms. Please let me know what the results of his back tests are.
I just had lumbar steroid injections which cleared up my lumbar pain 100%. I have had quite a few sets of these but never with such great results. My doc told me he used a different medication this time . I had lots of nerve (sciatic) pain down my new hip and operated knee and all are cleared up now. I pray something will work for your husband as well. I just need to get the thoracic section calmed down!!!
I can't comment on the continued knee exercises. I would definately ask the back surgeon.
judy

Judy, what are thoracic disks? It sounds painful. It's the waiting to get these tests done that kills you.
This back surgeon advertises that he can cure back pain without surgery. He is the same doctor that performed his surgery in 02. Were the steroid injections a permanent fix for your pain. Will the pain reoccur? I'll let you know what plan of treatment he has in store after Wednesday's visit.
Thank you all for your concern.
