I have just be diagnosed with necrosis on the distal femur and also have a below knee amputation on the same(24 yrs ago). I go for the core decompression next week and if this does not work the only alternative is KR or above knee amputation(the latter I want to avoid).
Has anyone heard of a KR in this type of situation? I know that the knee will not retain its original shape and a new prosthesis will be needed. The doc mentioned that since there was no lower limb the alignment would be difficult for the KR.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi mike, Please forgive my ignorance, but why would you prefer KR to loosing a little more? Is it because of the leg prostetic? Hope the core decompression does the trick. jen

Gosh - one scenario I have NOT come across! I could only imagine problems galore for it. Alignment is one for the surgeon but rehab would be the biggy for you. That's all I can contribute at this time.

Thanks for the input. I am very active and would prefer to keep my knee vs AKA. My BKA has been my strong leg since I had the right petella removed at the same time of the BKA.

Wow, it sounds like you have some serious challenges ahead. Hopefully the core decompression will work and stop the necrosis. The only thing I can think of is that you might want to get several opinions about what to do. When I had necrosis, I googled for information about it. There was one hospital that seemed to specialize in necrosis. If it would be possible to travel there for an opinion, it might be worth it. What I found out with the necrosis was that there was not a lot of work being done in that area and people mostly had no clue as to what caused it or whether it would get worse or not. Mine didn't fortunately, and the dead bone was removed during my TKR. Here is a web site I found that had a lot of information : broken link removed: https://osteonecrosisavnsupport.org/index.html Maybe it will be of help to you. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you all for the input and support. I will know in 6-7 weeks the outcome of the CD.
