Today I am very happy with my knees (one 8 months, other 12 weeks). Went to Fourth of July party/parade and walked a lot over non-even terrain, steps, etc. I felt so much more confident in them than I have before, I guess 12 weeks makes a big difference. They loved to walk and go up steps.

I've already posted that due to a strain in new knee and facelift that prevents leg raises, etc. I haven't done much exercising so I didn't expect much from my knees but they really delivered. There was a band and I couldn't help myself from dancing.

Two days ago our outdoor umbrella blew over, I tried to carry it up stairs and my knees did not like that, they went all wobbly on me. Don't know how much that umbrella weighed but I just couldn't carry that weight and climb stairs too.

I'm wondering when I'll be able to carry weight like that while going up stairs. But in the meantime at least I can walk and even dance on not too difficult terrain. I'm pleasantly surprised.

Holli that is so awesome. Im so glad they came thru for you. Now you will have 2 good knees and noone cant stop ya. I dont know, I dont think I would carry anything heavy upstairs till you were really really confident. I am so happy for you. Thanks for posting, that 8 mths knee makes me smile for things to look forward to....Great Job!!! You did it !!!

Ahh Hollie,
You danced!!! Wow that is so great. And I bet you were the Prettiest Lady there!!!
I really don't think you should carry heavy thing up a flight of stairs ever!!! Not just because of New Knee's but Back, Shoulders, and maybe eve Hips!! Just becarefull ok!

Boy Hollie! You danced? Now you are making me want to try. That is wonderful. :)
I am 10 weeks and I lifted one of those huge buckets of laundry detergent yesterday at Costco too- not good. sometimes I get a little cocky.

But very very happy for you. Glad you had such a good time- lots to celebrate.
Best wishes,
Nancy

In time, Hollie, in time! I was delighted to walk downstairs carrying a bag of laundry today. 14 weeks. Thought it would never happen! But I could only do it the once. Next time it was back to dot-and-carry-one again!

It's surprising that carrying quite a bit of weight can make such a difference in how the knees perform. I guess that's just from not having enough muscle built up in quads, glutes, core, etc.? Or is it because something hasn't healed yet?

I have been lifting 50lbs since 6-7 weeks, but not walking with it. If I stand still, I can lift the 50lb bag of horse pellets (grain) and place them in the wheelbarrow a few feet away then walk with it to each horse stall to feed. Felt good the first time I did it. Took awhile to get my balance though. Really enjoy being back at the barn. Something peaceful about all those majestic creatures.

I don't try to carry much up the stairs though. Daughters usually grab my purse and bags and won't let me try for fear I might fall. Usually by the time I get home, I'm pretty tired from errands and running. Guess that will improve with time as well.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time at your 4th party. Keep up the great work Holly. Continue to enjoy your new life with new knees!!!

I think perhaps stairs are a whole other issue, hollie. Lot of mechanics involved in going up and down stairs so yes, I agree it's to do with healing and muscle tone and usage and balance and ...... well, you get the picture!

Hollie, as Jo says, it will come in time as you gain strength and balance. I'm 15 months out and just now beginning to feel balanced and safe enough to carry laundry baskets up and down our steps at the lake cottage. They are steep and it is a good workout for those muscles! You'll get there. But in the meantime, just be very careful on the stairs and keep working on your quad strength and balance exercises.

Holly this is wonderful news, and very encouraging for all of us. Thanks for sharing with us. I think stairs are very tricky. The balance issue is a big one while navigating a moving weight. Take care, but keep dancing. Old Goat:wink:
