I am 4 months post op.
How much kneeling do you do?
I have found I need to kneel at least once a day. I have just gotten down on the floor and knelt. Anyone else?
I have read we should kneel on a cushion. Is this always what you do or do you just kneel on the floor? I have just been kneeling on the floor.......
Just wondering.
Thanks,
Crystal

I am at 2+ months and kneel on the floor all the time. It is a weird sensation, almost like there is a pad btwn my knee and the floor.

Doubt there is much in the way of shouldn'ts! So long as your wounds are well healed, do what you can, how you can. Ultimate objective is to get you back to normal.

I'm at 10 months. I kneel whenever I need to. Like dw said, it feels odd but doesn't hurt.

the first few times getting up from kneeling are a "religious experience". make sure your balance is up to par (watch the pain meds).

I am at 10 months on the right knee and can kneel on it without any problem. I try to use a foam cushion when possible. My left knee is 6 months and I found that when trying to get something out of the van I was kneeling on both knees without a problem. The knees were on the carpeting in the van. It seems to get easier with time.

Cheers, Ross

I had a PT tell me that if you need to kneel, and have trouble with it, a good thing to do is to roll up a towel, place it under your shin and put your weight on the towel/shin rather than the knee.

Can't vouch for it, but it made sense to me.

I am 5 months post bilateral and my surgeon told me to avoid kneeling from here on. I have found this very frustrating. No kneeling, no sitting on the floor because it is tough getting up, no cross legged sitting, difficulty sitting on low chairs. I am and early childhood educator so all of the above are important. I also used to take yoga. Will I ever be able to do those things again? I will try the rolled up towel under the shin. Great idea. It is tough when you want to get something out of a bottom cupboard. Thanks for the suggestion.

Marilyn,

The other thing I do is I have 2 or 3 small plastic step stools (the small one step type) around the house. If I need to go down near the ground and look for something on a low shelf or whatever, I sit on the step stool. Much easier and I know I can actually get up from it!

Since I have not actually kneeled in years, I don't find I miss it :)

I've been watching this thread and thinking to myself, "KNEELING??!! They've GOT to be kidding!" I haven't yet tried to kneel on this right TKR. The thought makes me want to run screaming. Of course, I haven't been able to be on my knees for years and years, so that may have a LOT to do with it.

Marilyn,
I wondered about the kneeling because I heard different things from different people. My OS said to go for it as I could not hurt the implants by kneeling. I too am in ECE and spend quite a bit of time at the children's level. My husband cut off the legs of a wooden table height stool making the level of the stool 19 inches high. I drag it over to the table and sit at their level using this. Kneeling to pick up toys under furniture it the tough part for me. I know it is the scar and the scar tissue underneath I am aggregating.
Hopefully it will feel better kneeling as time goes by.
Thanks for all the responses everyone!
Best,
Crystal

I have a friend that had left TKR 8 months ago he came to work monday and said he had a strange thing happen over the weekend. He had knee problems for many years and had noy run for 3 or four years not even tried. He had gotten a new puppy for Bday and taken him out for a walk the dog got off the leash and headed for the street. He said he took off running before he knew it and it was great. Aside from a little muscle pain the next day it was great. We have all given up so much it's great to hear people regaining life.

I am 8 months from an RTKR and kneeling is getting easier and easier. When I first tried it on a hard surface a couple of months ago, there was an odd feeling....not pain really, probably the scar tissue. But gradually the feeling is diminishing and I can actually put my knee down on a wood floor to get my new puppy and her toys out from under the bed. I have to believe it will get even better in the months to come. So for those behind me in recovery, I say go for it whenever you feel you would like to kneel!!!

Crystal,
I am 13 1/2 weeks postop and find I need to kneel a lot too. Well, I don't need to but I practice a lot of yoga and kneeling comes up a lot. I really want to be able to do it. I'm working on it but it seems more painful for me than the other folks who've replied on this thread. I feel a burning sensation under the scar that is unpleasant and painful. I do kneel and put weight on my hands and that helps. Or if I put most of my weight not on my scar that's much better too. Unfortunately, my OS did not curve my scar like some have done. Otherwise, I do feel numbness in the knees when kneeling but that doesn't really bother me.
I think it may be a full year until the scar-related pain goes away. At least that's what my OS has suggested.

You are probably right about the year timeframe. I started working out with my trainer again and she had the group down on our hands and knees doing an exercise. Oh my....I was pretty worried, but since we were on a foam pad sitting on carpet, I was able to do it for a while. It did start hurting after about a minute, though, and I switched the way I was doing the exercise so my knees weren't involved. I'm gonna keep working at it, though. I want to be able to kneel just like BEFORE surgery!!!
