Yesterday I went to final Dr.'s appointment before my surgery to make sure I ready for the surgery and to answer all my questions. I told him in the past couple weeks I've had a constant pain in my right hip. He said he'll take a look at it when I'm back on my feet after surgery. He explained it could just be from my knees being in so much pain that I'm favoring one over the other and is causing my pain to travel up my leg. Possibly the pain could disappear after my surgery and PT. Has anybody else had this problem? He didn't want to do anything right now because I have enough on my plate right now, which I agree.

Cindy, I developed some hip pain at about the 4 month mark AFTER surgery. I think anything is possible because your body does try to compensate when you hurt. Try not to worry about this new pain....just hold on like the doc says and I'm betting things will even out once you are in recovery. The knee replacement does get things back in proper alignment...which is one of the BEST parts!!

Thank-you Jamie. I promise not to worry about it. Like the Dr. said, I have enough on my plate. My Dr. said he was very pleased with the report he got from PT. Left knee which is my really bad knee is bending at 105 and my bad (not as bad) knee is bending 82 degrees (doesn't make since.) Also, when my legs are straight the back of my knees are flat. I don't understand how this could be good or bad since after surgery I will be starting all over trying to bend my knees. Can you explain? I am so new to this stuff. And very confused...but still excited. Monday cannot get here quick enough.

Hey Cindy yes I did to I soooo favored my leg that I think I was lopsided...lol I hope it goes away after surgery.....I think you will do fine. We are all hear for ya...

When you have serious alignment or flex problems prior to surgery (this frequently happens when a person puts off the replacement for a long time), it can make the surgery more difficult and time consuming. And because muscles have atrophied and adjusted to the situation, recovery can take longer as you have to get the muscles and ligaments built back up and realigned with the new knee.

The 105 is pretty good. I'm not sure I understand why your "better" knee is only 82. But if your surgeon is happy, then you should be happy too!!

I don't understand why the "good" knee only bends 82 either. Looking at the x-rays you can see for sure the bad one is really the bad one. It has spurs all around it.The right one (the 82 degree one) has no spurs at all. It's just bone on bone only.

The bone-on-bone isn't the only issue, Cindy. Arthritis also affects ligaments and muscles around the joint and this can affect ROM.

Hi Cindy, I have a similar problem. My left knee is very knocked kneed and it hyper-extends, which causes the leg to "cave in." When I stand or walk, my body twists to the left. The last couple of weeks, my left hip hurts much more than my knee. I don't see the surgeon for another two weeks, but I hope he will say the same thing yours did and not that it is actually the hip. When is your surgery? Best wishes!

Qiulia,

My surgery is tomorrow. I have to be at the hospital at 5:30am. I'm really excited about it. Can't wait to get both knees done and be able to walk...not waddle. LOL. What's the date for yours?

Cindy,
We need I of your friends to get you waddleing today on tape!!! And then when you are recovered another tape to show how great you are walking!!!!

My date is August 10 and I am having the left done. I have developed a bit of a waddle myself. I really hate to unexpectedly catch sight of myself in a window or mirror. I feel as though I'm walking normally, but I'm not! Soon, I hope to walk strong and straight. Good luck tomorrow. I'm excited for you.

Cindy, What is it with cookies I made some for my hubby and family since its going to be some time before I bake again I also made banana bread,my frezer is packed, just have a couple of things to finish up,just think you will be up and walking today my prayers are with you talk to you soon! Happy Walking

Cindy -
definitely wait and see how the knees play out. I had a tough time getting my rom back after my rtkr but am pleased now a year later. However, around the time I was having it manipulated the OS and I talked about hip pain that had developed and was really intense during range of motion shoving and stretching at pt and for hours afterwards. I had never really had hip or back pain before the tkr but then again the knee hurt so bad nothing else really registered. He took some xrays and we discovered I have - well had- major hip impingement on both sides of my hip. We discussed options and agreed that once the knee was up and functioning we would scope the hips. He went in arthroscopically (right one in Dec and the left in March) and ground off a bunch of excess bone from the hip area. He also shaved down both labrums which were torn up pretty bad. WOW what a difference. I stil am not quite 100 percent ALL the time but the majority of the time I am back to my old self, if not better. By doing the scopes we are hoping to hold off if not eliminate the knee for at least a new right hip. I am finally back on the treadmill and feeling good walking on the 9 incline for 48 minutes a day and hoping to get back to skiing latter this year. My hips were probably a contributing factor to the knee issue. My situation was genetic but it can also be found in very active women and men.

Best of luck with all you are going through. Its amazing what one xray can sometimes show. If I hadnt mentioned it to the OS he wouldnt have takena hip xray and I waould still be suffering. (we also saw how crooked my back is - beginning arthritis....ugh but since the hip scopes and the knee replacement the back is usually no problem... just need to continue to work on core strengthening)
