I have been told that a replacement knee will not be possible for me
- I am getting extreme arthritis etc etc - because I have no kneecap
- my original was taken away after a compound fracture some 38 years
ago - Any solution ? Patella Transplant ? Artificial Patella ?

Thanks in advance for any and all useful replies, Steven Ashton

Welcome to BoneSmart, Steve. Good to have you on board.

Well now, there's a question I've never come across before! I would certainly want that confirmed by a couple of other people first. Which hospital did you go to for this consultation?

Welcome Steve,
I am Crystal from New Hampshire in the USA. I have a friend who just recently had a TKR minus a patella! He is a 100% disabled Vietnam veteran who took 8 bullets in the war and lived. He has been minus a patella for a long, long time. The Veteran's Administration in Vermont did the TKR. I can get you his email address if you would like to correspond with him regarding the particulars.
He had the TKR last July.
He now stands up much straighter, to the point he was having back issues stretching those muscles that had not worked in many, many years. He also is taller! His other leg is partially paralyzed and he walks much better now and exercises on a stationary recumbent bicycle.
Best,
Crystal

Well thank you, Crystal - I couldn't really see why it shouldn't be possible but appreciate the confirmation. Another situation where the choice of surgeon is crucial. I can't understand these guys - surely if they think they are not competent to do such a thing, the honest thing to do would be to refer them on to a centre of excellence which is why I hope he'll tell me which hospital he went to. I can then tell him of such a place in his locality. I know pretty well all of them in the UK.

I had a BTKR last June. One knee has about 2/3 of a patella as the medial facet was removed many years ago. The OS said is would not be much of a problem as he just adjusted how to attach the button behind the patella and the thickness of the patella. Came out fine
