I am a 47 year old male and have 9 surgery's on my right knee. My first one was in 1977 for torn cartlidge. I have had a tibial osteotmy, 3 ACL reconstructions and the rest were clean out and cartlidge removal. My ACL reconstructions were done by the use of my patella tendon, hamstring tendon, and then by donor tissue. The inside portion of my knee is now bone on bone on one side. I cannot sit or stand very long due to the pain. Most of the time while sitting I have to get my knee in the "right" position to try to eliminate the pain. While walking it feels like it is bone one bone. When I bend my knee it feels like it is full of gravel. When I was in my early 30's The doc told my I had the knee of a 60 year old but was too young for replacement. I think it would improve my lifestyle at this point to have the replacement, do you think this would be the right move?

And then some, Don! Hi and welcome to the forum!

Sadly, the kind of history you have is not uncommon and frequently results in advanced arthritis, especially as you probably had much of it done in the old pre-arthrosopic days. It's borderline early but your quality of life is such that it over-rides any concerns in that area. Don't be put off by talk of wear. Wear is really more of an issue with ball and socket joints like the hip. In the knee, there's more stability because the weight bearing is end on end and not at an angle.

Read some of the threads in here and you'll soon see how folk have regained their lives after having new knees.

Let's know how you get on, OK?
