Hello @1975baja - and :welome:

Please will you tell us the full dates of all your knee surgeries, what each one was, and which knee it is, so we can make a signature for you? Knowing the exact dates and what has been done to your knees will help us to advise you appropriately in the future.
Thank you.

I'm sorry you've had such a bad time with your knee.
I don't believe that knee fusion is the only option left for you. even though fighting knee joint infections takes a long time, almost everyone beats infection in the end, without having to resort to knee fusion.

Were your surgeries done by a surgeon who specializes in treating infected knee joints? And did you have an Infectious Diseases specialist on the team treating you? It's always a good idea to have one of those.

I'm going to ask @Jamie, our Senior Administrator , to advise you.

Where is the surgeon you're seeing who is telling you that you need a fusion? I don't think that is your only option at this point. But I'd like to know who you've talked to and where they are located.

Only doctor I've talked to is my primary care. When this happened I was transferred to the Methodist in San Antonio. Had disease doctor there. My surgeon Dr. Biecker has mentioned knee fusion.you have to understand I was near death with septic shock. My bilateral knee replacement was done February 2015.right turned put good
Left had revision in August 2015. During down time my back went bad. Spent since then to get it healed.left knee was Not ever right always falling on it. Sepsis set in on left one in December. Had joint taken out December 17 2019. Spent 2 months in hospital and rest home now at home healing and trying to figure out my future

I was told I needed to have a hinged knee (not nearly as bad as yours but not good) to fix my right knee and the doctor was going to do it the next week. I asked for advice here and they found a much more experienced doctor that I had to wait for but it was worth it. Finally I feel like my 6th revision I just had last week will work. He was able use standard prosthetics and save my MCL. This forum has highly qualified advisors who helped me immensly. I waited for the top specialist and it was worth it. I know you might not be able to wait but I would certainly try as hard as you can to get into one.

You certainly have been through a lot and I know it must seem overwhelming to you. Just don't rush into a joint fusion until you've had a couple of opinions on your knee. Once you are healed and able, you should be talking to knee revision surgeons. If you've had significant bone loss in that knee as a result of the infection, you may need to travel a ways to see the right surgeon to handle your case successfully.

Thank you for those surgery details and dates, @1975baja . You've certainly been through a lot.

You would have had intravenous antibiotics during the time you had septic shock, I assume. Is that right? And are you still taking antibiotics orally now?

The usual procedure when your replacement hardware is removed is to place an antibiotic spacer in the knee joint. Do you have one of those now?

When all signs of infection have gone - this is assessed by blood tests and knee joint aspiration - a completely new set of hardware is usually inserted.

This is the stage at which the consideration of what sort of knee replacement hardware is to be used will need to be decided.
Jamie may be able to help you to find the right surgeon to do this for you. You definitely need a surgeon who is skilled at helping people who have had knee infections.

Over 6 weeks of biotic every 8 hours. Not on any now. Don't know when will be checked for infection go back Feb 27 to surgeon. All input is appreciated. Don't know what's available. Reason concerned about another surgery is I have had to many since 12 of 02
Total right hip. 04 right collarbone. 06 prostate with naval hernia and gallbladder. 12 left bicep. 15 both knees left now 3 times. 17 lower back.

@1975baja - you will need to be checked, to make sure that there's' no infection left in your knee. Can you ask your surgeon about that when you see him, on February 27th? Is it Dr Biecker you will be seeing?

Like Celle, I have concerns with Dr. Biecker monitoring your case at this point. You need to be under the care of an infectious disease doctor and a revision specialist surgeon. It didn't appear to me from looking at Dr. Bieker's website that he has this expertise. Can you go back to see the doctors in San Antonio to have them check on the infection?
