Well, the week of surgery is finally here! I thought it would never get here, and now it's just three days away! I just hope everything goes smoothly. There's one little possible bump in the road that is totally out of my control. My healthcare provider is having a work stoppage this week, and on Thursday, the date of my surgery, the stoppage is scheduled for my particular hospital. They called me today to say surgery is scheduled for now, but if not enough staff is there on Thursday, I will get a call before my scheduled arrival time telling me not to come. So everyone send good thoughts, etc., so things will go as scheduled.

Well that's a bummer! Hopefully it's not cancelled. I'll leave you the Recovery Guidelines to memorize before your surgery on the 13th....we'll think positive. And naturally I'm kidding about memorization but I would familiarize myself, if I were you, while you're clear headed pre-op. Keep us posted, we're here for you!
Wishing you only the best and lots of comfort as you wait.

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

Pain management and the pain chart
Healing: how long does it take?
Chart representation of THR recovery

Dislocation risk and 90 degree rule
Energy drain for THRs
Pain and swelling control: elevation is the key

Post op blues is a reality - be prepared for it

Myth busting: on getting addicted to pain meds
Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each, member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice. @kernsac

I sure hope it's not cancelled but would be nice to know that there is "enough staff":umm:
:fingersx: all is still on track!

Well, they did postpone the surgery, after I'd gotten my arrival time for tomorrow and was all prepared. The scheduler said she'd try to find something and call me tomorrow. I just hope it's not another three-month wait.

So sorry @kernsac ! This is everyone's nightmare. Fingers crossed you will get a date soon. Please keep us updated!

I'm sorry. That is so disappointing. I hope it's rescheduled soon and the wait is tolerable.
Wishing you comfort as you wait.
@kernsac

Oh wow @kernsac they cancelled on you? That sucks. I do hope that get you a new date soon...I can't imagine how let down you must be!

Will keep you in prayer and thought.

Please keep us posted when you hear something and try to relax till then.

Well, they gave me a new date. I'll have my right hip replaced next Thursday, December 20. It seems a long ways away, but it really isn't. Hopefully the time will go quickly.

:ok:
New hip by Christmas!:reindeer:
Glad no longer wait then that!

Great news!
Only 6 days away and with all the holiday activity ramping up for most, I'll bet the time flies fir you.
Wishing you a happy Friday and lots of comfort as you await your date.
@kernsac

well the day has finally arrived. I will be going to the hospital in a couple hours. It is hard to believe that I will be coming home feeling totally different than I do now. It is a bit scary, but I will finally be able to get this surgery behind me. Talk to you on the other side.

Youve got this...
A new hip will give you your life back.
Bye bye hip pain!:egypdance:
...sending good wishes and healing hugs in advance.
See you on the healing side!:ok:

Congrats! I think/hope you'll join most of us in considering this one of the best decisions you've ever made! The first few months can be a little rocky, but we'll be here with ya the whole way, like your own private Scooby Gang!

Try not to be aftraid....easy to say.
You're going to love the result and we'll be here to offer encouragement and support as you're healing.
All the best to you today. You've got this! :yes!:
@kernsac

You’ll get it! The first two weeks might be a bit rough or you might sail through it but people are great here with previous experience. All the best :)
