First off let me start by saying these forums are full of information. I originally posted on here looking for some kind of pain relief ( Tylenol, Meloxicam, etc ) and while the suggestions helped, surgery was the winner! A little about me:

I am a 45 yr old athlete heavily involved in lacrosse. I've played since I was in 7th grade and haven't stopped since ( although I have slowed because of my hip ). In fairly good shape and stay active. I saw 4 orthopedic specialists and the 1st said I had the hips of a 90 year old. I laughed and moved on. My ignorance caught up with me as the next 3 said the same. My right hip has severe OA and my left hip is on its way out. I had an MRI last week. No tissue or ligament tear damage but there are some cysts on the femoral head, which he expected. I can move around but I have a slight limp. I saw my surgeon at Stony Brook University and he not only indicated he can get me back playing but he would be using a Dual Mobility Implant. I was beside myself because I truly thought I would not be able to play again but this is all he does and has been doing it for a long time so my faith is in him. I research it as much as I can and I am aware that with any hip replacement comes the recovery.

I wanted to know if any of you can share your recovery experiences if you have had a dual mobility hip done. I know everyone is different, but to hear some post op recovery would be awesome. Did you walk the same day? What does it feel like lol I think I am just overly excited and optimistic about the process.

Thanks for everyone reading and I hope all of you are staying safe during this time!

@KDIMATT Have you had surgery done by Dr. Nicholson? He will be doing my Dual Mobility hip replacement in the next 2 months so any information you can give would be awesome!

I'm having a replacement next month and my doctor did not mention what kind of hip replacement they will use. I just googled Dual Mobility Hip replacement and it seems like the type of hip replacement I should have since i'm athletic and plan to continue working out after my surgery, is this something I should be asking for?

Hello, Welcome to BoneSmart. Thanks for joining us!
Wondering if you have your surgery scheduled yet? If so, please leave the date and which hip will be replaced. The info will be applied as your signature. I believe you’ll love the result of this great surgery which will lead you back to a full, active life.

The two members that come to mind in regard to Dual Mobility are @dapplega and @dlp
Both friendly guys who will hopefully get a notification and share their experiences with you here. Stop back often, we’d love to follow your journey back to pain free living.

Hi @zuffa27 welcome! I had to look up dual mobility-- very interesting! Looks like it might be more durable?

I have the regular kind, and am older, and never played a team sport nor even tennis. You ask do we walk the same day? Usually, yes. I walked just a few hours after surgery both times. For the first one, I was too dizzy on the first try, but eventually I had to pee so badly that we got me up. I was so exhausted by that little trip that I stayed in bed until I really had to go again! Second hip my BP didn't drop (more's the pity) so I was waltzing around enough to make the nurses warn me to get back in bed because I wasn't supposed to walk alone yet! I might have walked as much as a quarter of a mile before I left hospital the next day. And I was respectively 16 and 20 years older than you, with some pre-existing conditions. You are younger and more resilient-- but! you will still take the same amount of time to complete healing as everybody else. Just sayin'!

You'll be back to lacrosse and having fun showing off what your new hip can do. Patience!

Surgery is set for Sept 21st and I check in with the surgeon Aug 12th to find out what he is going to do

Wonderful to have a date to aim for. Going to think positive thoughts that nothing postpones it for you.

Surgery is set for Sept 21st and have been reading the various forums. I gotta say its full of good info and good vibes! I've started a mini checklist of things to get prior to my surgery ( extra ice packs and couch risers for my couch lol )

Hi @zuffa27 - I've just moved your post, above, from the September Sapphires thread and into your own pre-op thread.

I'm glad you're finding the information on BoneSmart helpful, but the monthly team threads are primarily to allow you to see who is having surgery the same month as you. They are not for chatting, comments, or questions, which should be posted in your own thread.

Your name and surgery date are on the September Sapphires list. There aren't many names there yet, but there will be many more, as we get closer to September.
