I am new to forum and am excited to find such a place. I am 95% sure i want/need a new right hip. I cannot put on my right sock and worst of all when I play golf my swing is limited and it hurts really bad after.

Im taking 1800mg of ibuprofen to even play.

I have an appointment with Dr Eggers in Louisville, ky Dec 3rd.

Welcome to Bonesmart. I think you'll find the people here very knowledgeable and supportive. I can definitely relate to your feelings about your hip. I waited too long to have my hips replaced, but Tom Watson has said that you know it's time when putting on your shoes and socks becomes an Olympic event. I think Watson had his hip replaced last fall and you may remember that he was leading the British Open after the first couple rounds this year. Just find a good Orthopedic Surgeon who does a lot of hips and you will be in good hands. The surgery and recovery is no picnic, but it sure is great to be pain free again after it is all over.
Good Luck,
Doug

Welcome, Phil! You have found the right place for support as you go through your surgery and recovery. I think you'll find it is time for a new hip. After all, you want to get your life back, don't you??!!!

We have lots of "hippy" members who can chat with you about their experiences. The whole surgery thing is so much easier if you have information and know what to expect. Sadly, not all doctors and hospitals provide that for you (they are busy doing their surgery thing!), but you can find it here at BoneSmart. Just cruise through some of the old threads and you'll find lots of helpful information.

And, if you come up with specific questions or concerns, just post them and you'll have plenty of response.

Hello Phil and welcome to the BoneSmart family! You need to read this thread How to choose a surgeon and a prosthesis and then some old threads in both hip forums. If you have any difficulties finding things, feel free to ask me, Jamie or anyone.

Also, instead of taking so much ibuprofen - which though a good anti-inflammatory is actually a fairly mild pain killer - why not try some tylenol? Or get something from your GP like co-codamol? You'll find it helps a lot more.

Jamie - we 'snapped' again!

Boy, did we ever!

Ho and welcome im a knee but i wish you the best for a speedy recovery..............you totally picked the right place these people have helped me so much and we will for you...............)

hiya phil, i know how ya feel.i have a surgery date, and i kinda feel like i might like to find the back door.trouble is the hip problem wont get fixed that way,, and would be one of the slowest escapes on record anyway.I really am looking forward to the mobility i had a long time ago, the long walks in the woods, the weekends of biking , all the stuff i used to take for granted.Use the information you will find here to educate yourself, its a real wealth of information , and everyone seems more than willing to offer advice and encouragement. like any journey, the first few steps are the hardest to take.

Thank you all for your support!!!!!!

Questions:
I have heard Dr Eggers is good and has done a lot of hips. How do I get data on that?

Should I get another opinion even if I like him on Dec 3rd?

Where can I find a list in Louisville, KY?

Phil welcome. Sorry i'm useless on answering your questions. But i can tell you i love my new right hip. It is just awesome. You'll be very happy
judy

josey thanks for your suggestions

I have tried at my GPs suggestion
**Acetaminophen**

and it took a daily dose of 8 gelcap's to get to sleep that night. I also tried
naproxen and it worked but I felt drugged.

Went off ibuprofen for 4 days to see how much pain i had and it was considerable
1 to 10 maybe 6 or so.

took 600mg of ibuprofin and felt whole again.

pain went to 0 except when i stressed hip. I guess this is more evidence to go ahead and get it done

hi phil i can only give you my experience and since im one of the few avid golfers that post here a little info on that too.It sounds like you about ready i also went through the days of not being able to put on m y sock and taking aspirin to play a round.I can tell you i was back on the golf course 6 weeks after my lthr and had no pain!!.And trust me its alot more fun to be able to walk after a round then to be in pain so go for it you wont regret it nor will your game!!

Phil,

I'll be having hip replacement(right side) in Louisville, KY with Dr. Schaper (Ellis & Badenhausen Ortho.) on Dec. 8th. I have also heard Dr. Sweet recommended(in with Dr. Eggers). They have a good reputation. I was looking for a dr. that would do the anterior approach so I went with Dr. Schaper. I did visit one other dr.before deciding on Dr. Schaper. My suggestion is to read and research alot about hip surgery here or online for as much info. in preparation for your visit/consultation. I was discouraged by the first dr. because he spent our consultation time trying to talk me out of the anterior approach not about my hip problem and issues. I found Dr. Schaper and was very confident after our consultation. I set my date for hip replacement right away. My pre-opt visit and registration at Norton's has futher reassured me that I am doing the right thing. Not to say that nerves don't get the best of me sometimes.

My family and I just got back from a trip to Mass. to my mother-in-law's memorial service this weekend. The sitting time on the planes and traversing airport terminals was agonizing even with assistance. My family helped me all the way but I sure want to rely on my own two legs with no pain. It is an experience like that just strengthen my resolve to see this through and come out on the Other Side of all this

I hope for the best in your doctor decision and good luck on any upcoming hip surgery dates! Let us know how it goes!!

betsy Thanks.
Dr. Schaper (Ellis & Badenhausen Ortho.) i will look into them because i too believe the anterior is better. i see Eggers on the 3rd.

Have you or anyone heard about the DePuy type hip? Got a web site for them and they look good.

They say in louis, Jonothan yers.... and Lawrence schab both do anterior hip replacement. Will call them fri. so now i have a list:

Eggers
Schaper (too cool for a name for ortho guy)
Yers...
Schab

Betsy

keep me informed. since you are in louis, send me your email and we can talk directly.

I hope all goes well on the 8th.

Phil

Hi folks,
If the surgeon is a competant surgeon then in my opinion anterior is the only way to go....I found it really remarkable how little pain I had and how quick my recovery was. I was off pain killers in just over a week and by day 3 or 4 I only had an occasional paracetemol....
Rachel

THANKS RATCHEL

I am going to talk to 3 docs. One does standard and 2 are anterior guys.

What is paracetemol.... drugs??

You know it as Tylenol or acetaminophen.
