TKR Just a little support...

Thanks @Jockette . Ive got a box of freezer bags to fill and my towels to wrap them in. Wedge is packed. Haven’t told mom yet, but I’m going to have to “Pee” about every 2 hours.

So sorry @lopat. Good luck on the drive. I agree that taking ice packs are a great idea, I use them each day to and from work, and I go about an hour each way. It will definitely help if you take breaks to get out of the car and walk around for a bit whenever you need it so you don’t get too stiff. I’m finding I’m pretty good for an hour, but once I’m at more then an hour and a half straight driving I would like to have a break and get out of the car. I usually can’t because it generally happens when I’m stuck in traffic! But if I could, I would, so try to take good care of yourself.

Made it to NC in good time, especially given it was Sunday on 4th of July weekend. I drove about 3 hours (for some reason, driver’s seat is more comfortable than passenger seat. Could it be I’m just a control freak?) when in the passenger seat, I kept my foot elevated on my handy dandy collapsible foot stool. We stopped about every 2 hours so I could walk it. When I got here, I iced and then took a 10 minute walk. Feels fine today.

Looks like everyone is doing well although I need to go read more of the personal threads. Hope you all had a good weekend.

Good to hear you made it. I sometimes iced while driving by pushing an ice pack up my pant leg. The pant kept the ice pack in place and even though my leg was down it was still iced.

So funny thing happened in NC (not). My 82 year old mother tripped while trying to step over a baby gate. Landed on her right knee. I tried twice to get her up, it hurt too much. Convinced her to let me call 911. They took her to hospital. She has a straight line fracture of her right tibia. They casted her from foot up to mid thigh. I got her in the back seat, got her back to my Aunt’s and had to lift her up a step. Thank god she’s small. My knee held up great. I made the 12 hour drive back over Wednesday and Thursday by myself while mom ride sideways in the back like Miss Daisy. Took her to the orthopedic today. 12 weeks no weight bearing. Wow! The nurses in NC did such a nice job with the temp cast he’s going to leave it on for now. Lolol at the hotel Wednesday night, they had to wheelchair and it was way too far for mom to hop on one foot even with the walker. There was a desk chair in our room with wheels, so I used it to take her down the elevator and back to the car.

So the funny part, I thought my knee would be screaming from all the driving, walking, lifting etc. it is less swollen than it has been. Looks like a real knee. Hasn’t hurt at all, just a little stiff when I first get up from sitting. I feel like God was looking out for me. 8 weeks was certainly a huge milestone. @RAD agree. Knee feels almost like my own.

Happy belated AnnKNEEversary @RAD , @fenway09 and @Indygo!

Sorry about your mom's fracture. Happy your new knee held up!

oh @lopat.........geez.....I am glad you are well healed and in good shape to care for your mom. I was in her situation last summer with a tibial plateau fracture.....surgery with 12 weeks NWB.....so I feel her pain. The universe is watching out for all of us even though some times it may not feel like it. :tiredwheel:

@lopat, your poor mom, I can't believe that. On the brighter side, I'm so glad you did so well and are feeling good and strong. I'm very similar, feeling a little stiff when I get up after sitting for a long (more than an hour like in the car or my desk at work) time. Generally no pain, still just a little uncomfortable in bed at night, still need to shift position several times during the night, hopefully that will pass soon.

Hope you are able to rest this weekend!

@lopat I am so sorry about your mom, but :wow: on how well your knee held up!! I'm only 1 week behind you, and there's no way could have even made the drive, let alone do all the lifting. I am very thankful things have gone so well for you. :)

It is amazing the strength God gives us to get through and do the things we have to do. You did well!

@Rockgirl4 i was dreading the trip. My knee did yell at me on the trip down. It was red and swelled. I iced it the first 2 day. Wednesday when I started driving, I guess it just gave up. IMO, I had 2 milestones. 10 days and I weeks. Between those 2 there was progress but so much more at those 2.

And I just read your thread. You sound really close to where I was at 7 weeks! :console2:

@lopat I think once your knee gets used to something it starts to accept it. When I started driving to and from work, the 1st few days were rough, then it simmered down.

@lopat Wow, what an unnecessary adventure. I'm sorry about your mom, that can't be fun for anyone. But it's fantastic that your knee settled down and was up for the challenge.

I hope I'm doing as well at 8 weeks. That's when I'm scheduled to do knee the second.

I hope I'm doing as well at 8 weeks. That's when I'm scheduled to do knee the second.

While I wouldn’t necessarily want to do the other knee,(in the schedule with left hip) I could do it now. Keeping fingers crossed for you.

Thanks. I know it is soon, but I swear, when I walk now, the new knee is wonderful and the original knee still has the awful grinding, burning pain. I'd do it today if it weren't for logistics. I need the new knee able to handle stairs before I do the second one.

@Benay I wont say it's fun. I was up all night with cramped muscles and I am tremendously relieved that my specialist will handle pain management for the next one. It's as awful as everyone warned me.

But being in pain all the time. Being unable to walk from a regular parking place to a building. Unable to duck into a store at need quickly. Unable to have any sort of normal life. Unable to travel the way I love to do. That's been my circumstances for the past 5 years.

Getting my life back is more than enough incentive to work through the bad days.

Five years was a horrible sentence I'll keep watching your updates. Specially for second op. It'll be so nice to do normal things again hopefully painlessly.
