Less than a week now. It seems to be coming a lot faster than it did weeks ago. I think I am all set but I still can't get out of my way. I have nothing set up at home. I can't find my reacher. i have no idea what food to buy. Walking around in circles.
Sheila

Oh honey! You are in a funk! Get in some little flans/quiches and pizzas and ready meals you can put in the freezer. Cheese, eggs, fruit and juices will keep in the fridge until you get out of hospital. Loo rolls, tissues, all that kind of stuff.

Anything else, anybody? Quick - quick!

Ice gel packs or an ice machine....stool softeners.....comfy sweats or something with elastic waist to wear after surgery.....

Great idea on the frozen foods. I should do this because my husband wouldn't know what I like. Now that you gave me a little shove I can think of other stuff too. Thanks!
The ice gel packs will be a great idea to get. Would Activia (yogort) be good?
I will print this out to take to the store with me. Thanks!

Yes, the yogurt is wonderful for you and sometimes when a meal seems much right after surgery, something light like that would be good.

I had general anesthesia and was queasy for a while so I would recommend soup. white rice, plain crackers and applesauce.

The tools I've found most handy, which I purchased at the hospital as part of the hip replacement kit are the reacher and the leg lifter. I bought a gel pack, but it is very thin and doesn't stay cold long so my husband bought me a 2 pound bag of frozen peas.

I'll be thinking of you on the 9th.

I always say.....don't forget to pack your patience and your sense of humor! You'll definitely need BOTH! :). Can't wait to hear from you nonce you're on the other side!! :)

Make a list of things you need to do before hand...It will keep you calm and organized.. It will all fall into place you'll see. Figure our where you will when you get home and get that ready a lil table, medicines you will need. Computer lol . Phone close. You will be just fine......You will be in my prayers...

Good luck and just remember you have a whole host of folk ready to cheer you through.

I don't know about packing patience since I could not find mine. Have had them for a long long time. Ha Ha

Good luck look forward to seeing your post

Pat! You left your patience HOME??? Oh no!!!! :)

Sheila
We'll all be thinking about you and praying for you. Hang in there girl... your almost on the other side and believe me you'll have a new life that will be great! It's not easy as we all know, but it is so worth it in the end. Post as soon as you can. We'll be waiting to hear from you!

hi Sheila. i am on june 15th, am getting nervous myself. dont have anything ready. will you have general anesthesia ?

Don't worry too much about what you'll need when you get home, Just get some basic supplies as Jo suggested and remember you can call on friends/relos to get stuff for you and if that doesn't work internet groceries is easy, or telephone shopping too....there is always a way of doing things and allowing your family and friends to help you is actually giving them the opportunity to do good for someone else....

As for reachers and all that the hospital will be able to help you out with all that stuff. They won't let you go home unless you are not at risk of injury and the way they guarantee this is to ensure that you have all that stuff....at least thats how it works in Australia And all the toilet seats etc are easily available for hire/ or purchase by phone

All you need in hospital is loose fitting pjs/nightie/ dressing gown, basic underwear, comfey well supporting shoes, toiletries.....a small amount of money (for magazines and the obligatory chocolate!) and as others have said patience.....oh and don't forget to organise some one to take your washing home (and bring it back again...my husband was good at taking it home, but getting it back again was a challenge!)

Please don't panic.....its a bit like childbirth.....despite all the things we think we need to have when a baby is born....if you go into labour and you are not ready, you'll sort it out and the baby (and the hospital) will work it out. I've had 4 babies without a bag being packed each time....

All will be well
Rachel

Best wishes Sheila,

Wow Rachel you really do know how to explain things well.

You all have proved that I am not alone in this process and I want to thank each and every one of you personally. I took an ativan last night and fell asleep on my right side and didn't move until I woke up this morning. Remember I am having my left hip corrected first. I thought for sure my right hip was stuck or something but it hurt awful and made walking difficult.
I have my shopping day tomorrow and will pick up a few things that I will need at home. A freind gave me a loo handle bars contraption but I don't think I can use it because it doesn't raise the seat any and I am 5'9".
Sunday I have a horse show to go to and that will keep me busy all day as long as I put sun screen on. I don't need a sunburn before surgery.
Sheila

Sheila, Wishing you all the best for your big day coming up! Soon you will be on the healing side.

I am tall, too, 5'10", and I found my most useful piece of equipment at home aside from my walker and cane was the commode that is placed over the toilet. It provides a raised seat and arms. I used this for the 6 weeks after surgery. Rachel is correct -- the hospital will send an occupational therapist to your room to ensure you have what you need before you go home.
