June 2012 - Are You Having Knee Surgery In June?

Hi All:

I am brand new to this group, so please excuse me - I thought I posted yesterday, but don't see it, so I probably did something wrong...

Anyway, I am having BTKR June 20, which is just about four weeks away I wasn't nervous when I scheduled it, which took about 6 months to get on the schedule, but as it gets closer, I'm feeling a bit anxious.

As an RN for many years, I have reassured patients numerous times that all would be ok - now I just need to take some of my own advice.

I look forward to this group and thank you in advance for your community support.

Lisa

I might be. I see the surgeon on the 24th, next week. I am a little worried about the fact that I have fybromyalgia and other serious health problems. I saw a sports medicine specialist and he said that both knees are "horrible" after seeing the x-rays but I don't think I can handle having both done at the same time. I am a little bit discouraged in that the wait to travel after surgery seems excessive. We have plans to spend a month in late summer at the beach in our tent trailer and I have a new great-grandchild coming and plans are to spend Christmas with the new family. And frankly, some of the illustrations here make me sick to my stomach. Maybe I should wait longer? I had the left knee "scoped" in 1998 so maybe I can just wait a few years more. Every doctor I have ever seen has said to wait as long as you can. I can wait some more!

Hi! Cookie, welcome to the forum. It appears that you have read "Total Knee Replacement and Rehabilitation". So you are aware that recovery from TKR is much, much longer than from other surgeries. So deciding to have the surgery entails making a fairly long term commitment to recovery.

It's not that you can't travel. It's that travel will be difficult and uncomfortable, and some of the activities others engage in may not be possible for you. You may not be able to really enjoy the trip. So it's best to leave travel until 4 to 6 months after surgery.

Having this surgery is a very BIG decision, and you want to be sure that you are going to be sure in your mind that you're doing the right thing for you if you go forward. Without the surgery, your knees will never get better--just progressively worse. I am your age and had both knees done 2 days apart---it is not harder to recover from 2 knees. I am now 6 months post op and couldn't be happier that I had them replaced. Kneewise, I am living a pain free life.

Keep reading and researching. And if there is anything we can help you with on the forum, please do not hesitate to post us with questions, concerns, and whatever else may be on your mind regarding TKR.

Hi, Cookie....welcome! Judy's comments are excellent and hopefully will allow you to at least consider having both knees done at the same time. It would definitely get you out of recovery faster than having them done one after the other (with months in between).

I know you have plans....we all did before our surgeries. There is no "good" time to be out of commission and not doing all the things you want to do. But....I can promise you that you will continue to get worse and if you wait, you may get to the point that you need surgery immediately and are in extreme pain. At least this way you can do some planning and make proper arrangements for your recovery.

You didn't indicate whether the "sports medicine" doctor is the one you might have do your surgery. If that's the case, you may want to reconsider that decision. Most of the sports medicine doctors do a variety of orthopedic procedures. You want a surgeon who does only knee (or at a minimum knee and hip replacements) and does at least 250 knee replacements a year. This ensures he is skilled at his profession and it minimizes the risk of problems after surgery.

The sports medicine doctor does not do knee surgeries. He has referred me to a specialist. I am worried that he will not want to do surgery until I lose a lot of weight. I'm 250 pounds. I am not going to be able to lose that weight for a long time. I have a stomach problem and have to eat every 4 hours or the pain is as bad as my knee!

Also, we just found out this weekend that my daughter is having major nerve problems with half her body going numb. She is having trouble walking when this happens. She is my little girl, even if she 49. I need to be able to help her, isn't that what mothers do? I've been doing a lot of reading, here and other places, bought the book recommended as well as another, and nothing I've read tells me that I can really help her before next year if I have the surgery. That may be too late for her. So I think I have decided to not have the surgery. I'm 14 years out from having had the knee scoped so I've been in pain for a long time, about 20 years, and I can handle this amount of pain until she is ok. She is very precious to me.

I don't believe in PT. I've been through twice in the last 3 years and they have given me exercises that have only made my knee pain worse. It has taken me until just recently to get past the damage they did to my right leg from the knee down, painful popping and cracking below the knee. I don't mean just hearing it, feeling it, I mean PAIN.

Cookie, of course your daughter is very precious to you, and it is completely understandable that you want to be there for her. Putting off surgery for yourself at this juncture is probably best since it really requires your full attention to yourself.

Your experience with PT is very unfortunate, but when the knees are gone PT to strengthen the surrounding muscles does does leave the knees sorer and does nothing for them.

Our prayers and with your and your daughter that her health issues will soon be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. We will be here for you when you do make the decision for surgery.

Take care of yourself and your daughter. We care.

I am having my first knee June 27. I wish it were sooner but have to make another trip to Chicago first part of the month for arrival of new grandson. We just left there a couple of weeks ago. Killer trip on the knees as they have a three story house which we must do all levels to get from where we sleep to son's room, so don't know how much help I will be to them. Hoping to do second knee 3-4 months after this first one. Hope to continue my food blog as I am now trying to accumulate some post that I will use first few weeks of recuperating. Stop by for a look www.rosemaryandthegoat.com . I need to get these allergies under control because of the coughing. I'm concerned about surgery feeling the way I do. They started acting up after going from Texas to France (they were just going into spring), back to Texas, then to Missouri and then Chicago. I think I went through 4 different spring seasons and can't kick the allergy problems but seeing allergist tomorrow. Hope I'm not a big sissy with the PT. I had been going to fitness center 3 times a week until France trip did my knees in big time. Glad to be part of Sunbeams. --

That is such a cool reason for going to Chicago, the birth of a new grandchild. Congratulations! And
I have added your name to the list of those having surgery in June.

Sorry about the stairs, that is rough. My biggest realization that I needed a TKR was when I could no longer do stairs, even one at a time they are painful, so I sympathize.

Hopefully, being there with a new grandchild will kick your endorphins into overdrive and help provide some natural relief to the pain and your allergies. Perhaps you can get a pain rx to at least use at bedtime to help relieve some of the pain.

Hello everyone. I just joined the forum. I am having TKR on June 14th. I'm from Naperville, IL. All this is pretty scary stuff and am glad I found this forum. It looks like I have a lot of reading ahead. :)

This my right knee. I tore it years ago playing racquet ball and it has been getting worse over time. It is only the cartiliage on my outer side that is the problem but it is gone. I tripped back in Sept and hurt it again and then did a LOT of walking on vacation and it really suffered.

We discussed PKR but decided TKR was better for me. My left knee is great so that is good. Good luck to all of you having your knee done in June!

Hi! jmps, glad to have you here on the forum. And you are quite right, there's a lot of reading to do. But once you become informed, it will stop seeming like such "scary stuff".

I want to suggest that you start a thread of your own in the pre-op forum. When you first sign in and select the Knee Replacement Pre-op Area, you will see a blue oblong on the upper left had side that says "New Thread". Click on this and it will take you to a message box. You type in the title you decide on for your thread and then tell us bit about yourself. The advantage of having your own thread is that you have a place to deal exclusively with you and we have a specific place to find you to post to.

It's my personal opinion that you have made a wise decision to have the TKR. So please avail yourself of the Library--loaded with great articles and start your own thread. Remember that we are here to answer your questions and concerns, to give you a place to vent if you need to, and to support and encourage you from pre-op through recovery.

Take care of yourself and keep us posted. We care.

Hi there Mike!
Well, we share a TKR date. I am having my first ever knee surgery of any kind, a TKR, on May 29th too.

If you would like to start a thread in the main Pre-Op knee area, folks will stop by to say hi and wish you well. Several on this board have had two TKRs done at the same time and will be able to respond to the closeness in time between the two surgeries.

This link should help:
http://bonesmart.org/public_forum/ho...ead-t3513.html

The short version is to go to the Knee Replacement Pre-Op area and on the left side there is a "New Thread" button that you click.

We are from around the world so have a bit of patience for the different time zones.

Again, a very warm welcome!

I am having BTKR sugery on June 7th.
Welcome Gamecock. I added you to the list of those having surgery in June.

How about starting your own thread and telling us a little about yourself?

If you go to the Knee Replacement Pre-Op page, on the left side there is a New Thread button you click.

I am looking forward to hearing more about your TKR!

Welcome!

Hello all. Well, I am very disappointed and sorry to say that my June 18th tkr of my left knee has been postponed due to my worker's compensation case. I have re-scheduled surgery for July 23rd and have another comp.hearing on July 5th, so I will know if I need to re-schedule again or not. Best of luck to everyone in this June group having the surgery!! I will have mine sooner or later!

I hope that it works out for you and you will be able to have your TKR in July! Keep us posted.
All the best!

a BIG Bonesmart welcome to all of you new to the forum and who are having a TKR coming up in June!

You are taking a big, big step in reclaiming your life! Please keep posting and let us know any questions or concerns that you may have---we will be with you throughout the entire process!
