THR Journaling healing of my new hip!

I have had really good luck with wearing Asics running shoes. I tend to get a good bit of medial/lateral movement in my ankle and also supinate with my right foot. Luckily there's a running store nearby and they did a very good job assessing me and fitting me in the right style shoe that supports my Loosey Goosey ankle. I am on my feet for many hours in my line of work and I wear these, in different styles daily. So, I had a new pair waiting after the surgery and they feel great.
Do you happen to know a certain brand or style shoe that helps support your feet? I knew I needed a new pair, didn't want any old habits carried over into the new hip.
The ones I have now are so nice and cushioned, too. Asics Gel Ecite 4. They aren't their newest model so it keeps it more affordable. I am guessing that they would be good for most people, actually. Many of my clients, after seeing mine, have ordered them for themselves and love them, too. But that being said, I'm sure another sturdy type of walking shoe would work, too. (obviously I can't give a short answer) :sigh:

I iced like mad for the first six weeks...then I iced after work almost every day for many more months...like even at 6 months:ice::ice::ice:

I went out and did about an hour shopping at Macy’s. I’m exhausted. Is this normal for 3 weeks post op?

Is this normal for 3 weeks post op?
I'm at 4 weeks today and couldn't begin to imagine shopping for an hour at Macy's! (Of course Macy's overwhelms and overstimulates me even when I'm healthy and full of energy). A 45 minute visit with friends at their house over the weekend sent me home to take a nap. There's a lot of healing going on and that takes a lot of your body's energy.

Hi @J-nice
It's more normal to not go shopping at Macy's for one hour at three weeks post op.
There's the getting ready part, followed by the drive / car ride, the trudging into the store, or mall, and then walking around for an hour. Even more tiresome if you were schlepping around with purchases.
Consider putting your feet up and icing this evening, without doing much else, and see how you feel tomorrow.
Let us know. Hope you have a good one!

I'm tired over here, right with you! I needed to go to my dealership to do an end of lease purchase as it had a good bit of equity in it and oh my goodness.. we were there for at least 2.5 hours and then stopped for a bite to eat ( and a malt...sigh)
Sadly, my body is tired but not my brain. I haven't slept well for days! It's making me a bit crazy.
But the ice packs went on as soon as we got home and I rested with my footsies up. Pizza has been ordered for dinner. :ice: I have several days on you @J-nice and still get pretty exhausted.. if this is like my last hip, exhaustion hangs around for a quite a long time.

 and yes,:ice:
Early days my friend.
That energy drain is For Real!

I forgot about the energy drain. It really is for real. Tomorrow I see my Ortho to go over my MRI of lumbar. Hamstrings and feet still hurting and both he and surgeon think it’s from my lumbar. I do too. I’m hoping epidurals will take care of it!

Another question..does anyone know how soon one can get a lumbar epidural after having hip replacement?

@J-nice I was in a similar position 4 years ago with my left hip. Only it was my neck. I had to wait until I was off the baby aspirin and then the Dr wanted to wait another week to make sure it was out of my system and then I was good to go with the epidural. Of course, you know that your Dr may do it differently but that was my story.

While waiting, my OS upped my dosage of Gabapentin to help with the referred nerve pain from my neck.
Its tough to wait and I'm sorry you have to go through this, too.

@CricketHip do you remember how long you had to wait? Did you have cervical pain before hip surgery? What level was your epidural? Did you have more than one injection?

Hi @J-nice I waited the 4 weeks for the baby aspirin regimen to be completed. The an additional week to make sure the effects of the baby aspirin was gone. ( Dr's orders) I had an epidural for my C-5,C6 area.. which means the Dr injected a little lower on my spine and aimed it up towards C5 and C6.. probably went in a T2.. If I rcan emember correctly I only needed one injection but I'm not sure that is accurate. If I can find my calendar from that far back Ill double check that. I've had lower lumbar epidurals too. Just not so soon after the THR.

Then I followed up with physical therapy to gert my strength back in my right arm and neck. whew!

None of the doctors seemed to think it a big deal. I just had to get past that baby aspirin time frame.

I did have cervical pain before the surgery. I was trying to continue working and because of my hip, I wasn't working with good ergonomics. Which caused quite a bit of pressure in my neck, as in a forward head position, which is brutal on a bad neck and stenosis.

I have what people would say are "issues" haha but I manage them well. You will do just fine, it's tough waiting the required time limits but it all comes around and gets resolved. Is your heel pain still pretty bad?

@CricketHip my heel pain is weird..it comes and goes and sometimes spreads to the arch area. The podiatrist thought it was coming from my back because there was nothing really wrong with my feet. I had the same thing with my neck about 15 years ago..a herniated disc in the same area but I had three injections. Thank god no issues with that since then.
My surgeon’s PA called back and said I can go ahead with the injection in my lumbar. He didn’t say anything about the aspirin. I’ll call back to see what he thinks.
I’ve had this problem before with my back..no back pain but lots of Radiculopathy pain but this is the first time in my feet. Last time was about 10 years ago and the injection helped.
You and I have the same issues! Aren’t we lucky?

Very early days @J-nice So sorry you are dealing with back pain along with surgery pain. The energy drain was very persistent for me for the first month. My husband found me in the early days once with a plate of food in my hand sound asleep. I never nap. So the napping frequently was pretty strange or me. Hope you get relief for your back soon. Sending healing vibes. ❤️

J-nice,, uhm, yah. we are sooo lucky!:rotfl: Actually I try to remember that it could so so much worse, right? My injuries came from a pretty bad car accident when I was 17- the car flipped end over end a couple times. I continue to count my blessings that I can walk. But somedays it does get me down, I'd be lying if I didn't admit to that.

You are almost at your 4 weeks mark so that is great news about your approval for the epidural and I imagine that your specialist for that will be the one to tell you how long you need to wait after stopping the baby aspirin.
Hopefully its just 7 days like mine was! Best wishes with that..

My neck flared up again last year, it took 2 epidurals that time to calm it down. So i can so relate in every way to your story.
So, when do you think you can get in to see your doctor for the injection?

@CricketHip i do have to remember to keep things in perspective. My sister in law five years ago fell down her basement stairs and is paralyzed from T3 down. Her first year was very tough but she has been such an inspiration to me. She is mentally so strong. I’m waiting to hear from my ortho for injections. I contacted him through the portal. I’m stopping the aspirin today (I had 5 days left) . I figure it will be a week before injections. i’m Not using my cane anymore in the house but I do take it out with me as a just in case. So the hip is progressing nicely. As @Fit4Family said the energy drain persists for quite awhile. I do things that wham ..i’m Exhausted. Are you driving yet? I want to attempt to on Saturday.

@J-nice yes, I am driving! I didn't feel the urge really until this week. Today I drove to the mall to return a couple things that I had purchased online (big fail!) and the thing that I noticed the most was my thigh muscles fatiguing with constant pressure on the accelerator. So will plan to keep my driving distances a little shorter for a while. I am home now resting, it really tired me out.
I found the energy drain was a real factor for the first 2 or 3 months, especially when I returned to work.
That is tragic about your sis in law. just falling down the basement steps? I don't know her but I am impressed also if she's coping so well. good for her!
I hope you hear from your ortho shortly! Other than the radiculopathy you sound like you are moving right along.. woo hoo!!
