Hi, I’m having a thr on January 12th. I’m getting seriously wobbly about it! I’d managed to keep it out of my mind thanks to Christmas and new year, so it’s crept up on me!

@Georgia76 Welcome to BoneSmart! :welome: It is very normal to feel nervous or wobbly before having any major surgery! Do you have any particular worries or questions? I am going to leave you both our pre-op list of articles and suggestions and also the post-op list since your surgery is coming up soon. Do feel free to read threads here and also over in the hip recovery area.

Hip: pre-surgery considerations

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary.

2. Control discomfort:

rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
3. Do what you want to do BUT

a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

Sleep deprivation is pretty much inevitable - but what causes it?

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery.

While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Hi Georgia76,
You've come to the right place. Welcome to BoneSmart and thanks for joining us!

If you haven't already, read through the Recovery Aids and make sure you have all that you'll need for your return home once you're post op. That will keep your mind occupied a while longer and make for an easier start of your healing journey. We'll be available for support, so stop by often.

Which hip will be replaced, right or left? If you'll leave that information below we will add it to your signature along with your surgery date. As djklaugh mentioned above, if you are anxious about anything specific, please let us know and we'll do our best to ease your mind.

Only one week to go until surgery is behind you and you are on the mend. Lots of comfort to you as you wait!
@Georgia76

Best Wishes tomorrow!
Hopefully you're ready to roll and with any luck you'll share your journey with us on the flip side. Will look forward to seeing you there to share some Recovery Guidelines and offer support as you are healing.
