I am going to see my regular GP today because I think I have a sinus infection that has been going on for a while. Does anyone know if this type of infection presents any danger to my year-old knee?

Jamie
Sorry about the sinus infection. I don't know about our joints and which infections or even procedures are dangerous.
If none of us can help, just call your surgeon's office.
Good Luck with getting rid of the sinus problem
Judy

Maybe that is a good idea....to check with the nurse there before I see my GP this afternoon. Thanks for the idea, Judy.

Jamie,,,,,that's very good info! I. Would take antibiotcs as if you were having dental treatment! It certainly couldn't hurt! Hope you feel better! Let us know! :) ALWAYS better to be SAFE than SORRY!!!!! My mantra!!!!!

Judles, I'm one of those folks who doesn't like to take too many antibiotics, so I really wouldn't take the ones I have for my dental procedures without a doctor saying I should.

I did place a call with my surgeon's nurse. It will probably be this afternoon late before I hear back from her. I'm sure I'll know more too after seeing the GP at 1:45. This is just one of those funky things I never gave much thought to before. I don't ususally get sinus problems and thought I had a cold. But I realized today it's gone on way too long to be just a cold. And then I got to thinking that I didn't know whether sinus infections were bacterial or viral....

What about Tylenol cold & sinus in the mean time! I don't think that would be bad, but its better to check!

No, I think that would be just fine. But since I'm seeing someone in a few hours, I want all the symptoms to be there for him. Can't have him thinking I'm making any of this up, you know!!

Jamie,,,,YOU? Making symptoms UP!!!!! NOT our Moderator!!!:)

No I wouldn't make up symptoms, but that's always been an irrational fear of mine that someone might THINK that....moderator or not! Believe me, I have PLENTY of very human quirks!!!

Okay....surgeon's office called and the doc's nurse said no worries with sinus infections! So THAT answers my question and maybe will help ease someone else's mind out there. Although I didn't really think it would be a problem with my knee....you know how minds that don't have enough accurate information can be.....WILD!!!

Thanks, guys, for keeping me occupied until I got the answer from a medical professional. And Judy....BIG THANKS for your idea to just call the surgeon's office!!!

So glad ;you got the reassurance we all need. The knee is too preciious to gamble with.
I was never one to even take tylenol for a pounding headache so I understand not wanting to take antibiotics. I sure will to protect my hip though.
Now I wonder if the same thing goes for all the screws in my back and neck?
I guess I will ask next week, if I remember to write it down.
yesterday when my surgeon was entertaining the idea that my body may not like metal, I said, well I have had screws and plates in my neck . He then said, that is nothing, your thoracic spine has at least 20 times as much metal as your neck.
So my body is now worth more than the few dollars I have heard about.

Primary 'hot spots' are anything in the mouth and anything in the urinary tract which would be from kidneys to the outside. These areas are able to dump large quantities of bacteria straight into the blood stream - hence the term bacteraemia meaning bacteria in the blood. Such blood tests should be near zero but during an episode than get into their thousands. In her recent septic hip incident, my sister's bacteraemia was 12,000.

However, areas like sinuses and the throat, are more likely to have their overspill dealt with by the lymphatic system and the lymph nodes will act like the filters they are which is why we tend to get enlarged glands when we have a throat infection.

Curiously, Judy, plates, screws and rods, though still at risk, are only marginally so, probably because the implants are not one big bulky mass but lots of little ones and also because there is not so much inside the bone. Inside the bone (the medullary cavity) is where the blood cells are grown so implants there are more or less in direct contact with the circulation.

We'll have to be on our guards, forever!!!

I just returned from the doc and he told me I have inflammed nasal passages and ear tubes....NOT a sinus infection. He asked about seasonal allergies, which I have never had. So he thinks it was something that went along with the initial viral infection (cold) I had a month ago. He said that can happen where the virus goes away, but the inflammation stays to give you grief. I have a prescription for a steroid nasal spray which he thinks should do the trick in 7-10 days.

I knew I hurt on my left cheek and behind the left eyeball. The left side of my throat hurt too along with my neck. He said it can all be related and made me realize that my ear actually was hurting too....I just didn't know it until he pointed it out and could see drainage there too. The other parts hurt more. Gosh, I certainly do HATE not being well!!! Grrrrr.......

Hopefully it will get better now, though. It's going to be in the 70's here in Kansas City tomorrow and I had planned to do some things outside!

Not at all! As the years pass, your implants become sealed into a nice cocoon of scar tissue and are thus separated from the main circulation. The risk diminishes accordingly and most professionals would say that after 2-4 years, there is no longer any need for the prophylactic antibiotics before dentals work. Google it and see if what I say isn't so.

That's interesting, Jo....I had never heard WHY you might be able to stop the antibiotics after a couple of years. I'm going to try a Google search to read more.

Judy,
You really really need to stay inside during thunder storms....can you say lightening rod????

Assuming your rods and stuff are made of it - you do know that Titanium is more valuable than gold?
