I am curious if this has happened to others. Prior to my surgery, I was on high blood pressure for about five years. The day of the surgery I was told not to take the medication as would be expected. I did have some complications after the surgery with respiratory failure (I needed to be resuscitated.), and a significant blood lose resulting in anemia and the need for three blood transfusions. I am medically fine now with one surprise - my blood pressure is great without medication. My doctor has been checking my bloodwork and pressure regularly since the surgery and all is well. I have not been put back on my high blood pressure medication.

My doctor is curious to see if my returning to work will cause my pressure to rise again so I have to see him in a month. But as for now, I have not taken high blood pressure medication for the past two months.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Now that's a wild story, Red....I've not heard of that happening before and will be curious to see if others have experienced a "surgical healing" of blood pressure problems. Hope it stays that way for you!!!

Maybe you were in so much pain with the knees being bone on bone it made your blood pressure rise...... Just a thought. Glad it is better now!

That's a really logical thought, Crystal! Pain can have a HUGE effect on other things in the body. Wouldn't THAT be a beautiful result from knee surgery.

Hi--I don't know why your blood pressure has been lower for the past couple months--could be a list of reasons including no work stress(don't know)---but hope it continues for you. I have seen a few folks experience variations- BP up or down(as an RN) but without a good reason after an illness or surgery.

I do take blood pressure medication (have for years) and my pressure has remained in control----however in the hospital and in the last couple weeks-my BP has been lower than usual but I have remained on my usual medication. I had a very routine surgery process without excessive bleeding. I'll have to see--boy I'd love not to take BP med--but I'm not counting on my BP staying real low!

Best of luck to you--especially when you return to work! Nancy

Resusitated? Oh Red! It must be G-d letting you know that you should have one LESS thing to worry about! Just take it easy! (:)0)

One of the signs in theatre and recovery that tells us if the patient is in pain is elevated blood pressure!

I was on or shall I say should still be on high blood pressure medicine. I was told to take one the morning of surgery and while I was in the hospital the nurses gave me my medicine. However, when I got home I had problems...not with taking the medication but my pills cause me to have to pee so much more so with having troubles getting to the bathroom quick enough, I just stopped taking them for the time being. Before surgery my blood pressure was doing "o.k." it was high but not really high...138/86. Now it's 118/76 without medication for 3 weeks. When I started the medication I was 160/110...wow! My high pressure I believe was caused from stress at work.I love my job but it gets stressful with all the cookie orders and stuff.

My blood pressure usually goes down after surgery for a few months. Then it will return. I am not the best in keeping up with my meds so when I don't have to take the extra for the BP
I count each day a blessing it is low

I was told that some of the pain meds can lower your blood pressure. They also told me not to take a couple of my BP meds the morning of surgery. But the protocol seems to be changing because a year ago they had me take all of the same meds before my hip surgery. Sorry about your experience needing transfusions, etc. I guess I was lucky and avoided those things.
