Is there any limitations with getting cosmetic injections after surgery, such as juvederm or botox? Is there a need to take anti-biotics first? Or is this only important right before surgery and after? I've read where you must take anti-biotics before getting any dental work done, but is that only temporary or forever?

Hi Kimmiekoko...I too would be interested in the answer. I will be getting cortisone shots to my knees. Off course I could get the answer from my OS..but if anyone has the answer already that would be great.

There is no definitive answer, as best I can tell. My surgeon makes it clear that he feels I should use antibiotics before dental work....even routine cleanings....for the rest of my life. Some say for two years. Some say two years for routine stuff, and then for invasive procedures for life. Some don't say anything.

I say....let common sense prevail! If only it still existed.

That's a good question....one that's not been asked that I can recall. I'm going to tag Josephine and see what she thinks. @Josephine:

There's a very definitive answer - unless you suspect your beautician (or whoever) isn't using a new, sterile needle every time, there is no problem whatsoever. It should be sterile procedure, as with things like acupuncture, chiropody and tattooing, and I'm sure anyone doing it has been trained to wash their hands beforehand, make sure the needles are sterile and the skin properly cleansed with appropriate antiseptic. And all that is nothing to do with you having had a joint replacement.

As for taking abx after dental work and whatever, it's still a very open debate. Late onset infection in joint replacements from dental work, etc.. Though there's no real, hard evidence proving just where bugs responsible for late onset infections actually come from, I think it would be a brave surgeon/other who came out and said don't ever bother to take abx! Certainly not me! :snork:

A board certified cosmetic surgeon will be the one doing the botox injection, the same dr. I've gone to before. And, he does everything by the book. Thanks for the info, I feel more confident about it now.
