5 days post op TLHR, incision site is burning, there is no drainage, area not warm, no fever, had TRHR 5 years ago and did not have this type of pain, this time, they sent me home with a Pico pump
Any ideas as to why this area would burn, especially when sitting down or pressing on it?

Most likely it is nerves that were cut, should resolve with time. Call your surgeon in the morning for reassurance.
Sitting and pressing puts a stretch on your incision and may be irritating the incision.

Please post your surgery date, a moderator will add it to your signature for you. Having the exact date will help us properly advise you. Thanks!

Here are the Hip Recovery Guidelines, the articles are short and will not take long to read.

Just keep in mind all people are different, as are the approaches to this recovery and rehab. The key is, “Find what works for you.“ Your doctors, PTs and BoneSmart are available to help, but you are the final judge as to the recovery approach you choose.

Hip Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. At week 4 and after you should follow this

6. Access these pages on the website

BIG TIP: Hips actually don't need any exercise to get better. They do a pretty good job of it all on their own if given half a chance. Trouble is, people don't give them a chance and end up with all sorts of aches and pains and sore spots. All they need is the best therapy which is walking and even then not to excess.

I can't speak to any sensations related to the Pico pump, but I definitely experienced some pain and burning around the incision in the early days, especially when sitting down, moving position of the hip. Icing is always worth a try, if you haven't been doing it already. And definitely check with your doc if this is causing you concern. Likely though is just the extra blood flow and inflammation that will help the trauma to the tissues heal.

Hi Lulu, Welcome to BoneSmart and recovery. Thanks for joining us!
Any ideas as to why this area would burn, especially when sitting down or pressing on it?
Small sensory nerve fibers are cut with the incision. While healing you may experience sensations of tingling, pins and needles, itching, burning and even the feeling of a minor electrical shock. These are usually good signs that the nerves are spontaneously firing through the regeneration process. I also feel icing may help ease that sensation.

We've created a signature for your Left THR, with a date of May 9, 2023. Please let us know if that is accurate. Thanks

I had some burning around the incision for a little bit. Couple of weeks maybe. The inching though is what drove me crazy.
