This is a question for you gals out there: Can I have my toes painted during surgery or does nail polish have to come off?

Is a catheter necessary?

Nightgown vs pj's,I presume?

Thanks!

I'll give this a try....

I don't think nail polish is advised on toe nails... I didn't have it but seem to remember that from my previous knee surgeries. Has to do with checking circulation, I think

I didn't mind the catheter AT ALL. They pump a lot of fluids into you and the cath meant I didn't have to get up that first day and with my epidural remaining in place I was thrilled to be pain free and not have to get up to go to the bathroom. I think catheters are SOPs for KRs.

I wore the hospital gowns and didn't care to fuss with my own stuff. I bought some tear-away sweats to wear home.

Anyone else want to chime in here?

I was sad when the catheter came out!!! Like Beach said you do not have to get up to get to the bathroom. I am a hippy and could not move my leg one millimeter.
I was told no toe nail polish or nails or makeup.
I used the hospital gowns as well.

Defintely NO make up of any kind whatsoever!

Nail polish prevents us from checking circulation. Often we check that, specially on feet, by briefly pressing the nail and observing how quickly the blood returns - we call that the refill time.

Busher, lipstick, etc, prevents us seeing the proper colour of your skin and changes show up more quickly in the face than anywhere else, specially the lips, of course. Besides which, all that goo makes a mess on our equipment!

Mascara can crumble and fragments might get into your eye and cause corneal erosions. Eyeliner and shadow prevents the colour of your skin showing.

Most every OR I've worked in has bottles of acetone in their cupboard to removed any nail varnish and moisties to removed make up! In other words, we like our patients to present themselve as clean and clear as nature intended! Oh, and cut and file your nails beforehand - many's the time I got my arm scratch by even only slightly long toenails whilst seeing to a patient. Uh!

Nightdress is easier as pjs will make your knee hot and be constraining as well.
And to begin with, you'll have heaps of wool and crepe on your leg. Doubt you'll want anything more on your leg anway. And you'll be required to get into proper day wear from day one. Before that, with drip, PCA and (maybe) a catheter, you'll be better off in an op gown, believe me!

Gee...I got pedicures with nail polish just before both of my TKRs....no one said a word...It made me feel better seeing pretty toenails below all the bruises and swelling :)

Very interesting. I was told no makeup but did the same, painted toenails just for the occasion (THR). No one said a word and the polish stayed on through my first visit with Dr. at 10 days post op.

I asked about make-up and colored nail polish during my pre-op with my OS. I was told make-up was fine and colored nail and toe polish was fine as long as it was a light color... red, black, blue. purple were out.

Wow! What speedy response to my toenail polish question. Sounds like I better check with my hospital since I got varying answers from all of you. I have NEVER heard of tear-away sweats. I'm getting nervous, girls, and my knee seems worse every day :(

The tear-away sweats worked great! They snap all the way down the outside of both legs so you can unsnap to whatever level you want. They were really great for PT. Kept my other leg warm and covered while they worked on my KR knee, then snapped them back up when they didn't need bare skin anymore. I got them on-line. They are the type worn by basketball players.

Thanks for the info. Since surgery will be in January, being warm going to PT would sure be nice. Will look into them. This website is great!

Glad I read this as I always wear colored toe nail polish. I'd rather take it off myself. Would clear polish be okay?

Not in my book, but then I always ran a tight ship! Sounds like things are getting lax nowadays!

No nail polish up here either. I had my toes done 1 week b4 surgery - on our "cruise" - a wonderful french pedicure - at my preop I asked and was told take it off - I did. Then just to double check I asked at the time of surgery and she said they would have taken it off there if I hadnt already. I guess some ships are sill pretty tightly run - have faith Josephine!

The catheter was uncomfy (bad memory from trying to get out of the hospital after childbirth) - but necessary - Managed to get to the John quickly so they would make it go away!

Never thought of the tear aways - Great Idea - my hubby had a pair years ago!

A good robe!!! and comfy socks!!!!

Good Luck!!!!

Thanks to you, too, Marianne. A French manicure all for naught - ouch. I've started looking to buy some of the tear-aways and am finding many online. I wonder, though, if Gander Mountain might have some ,so I could save the shipping.

Beach,

There are tons of tear-away sweats on the web. I'm still going to try Gander mt. to try to avoid the shipping and handling. Great idea!!

Glad to help. They sure worked great for me!

I called ahead about the toenail polish and doc said fine. I was surprised because they made me take it off for a prior hip surgery.

So I had a pedicure right before my TKR and loved that I had it afterward.

I also love the catheter, maybe it's worse for men, but I never feel them attach it or detach it and love not having to worry about getting up.
