I am in physical therapy for a neck problem I've had. I mostly do things to strengthen my neck/upper back muscles, but when I first get there, she has me "warm up" on a recumbent bike. I have heard from other people that being on a bike shouldn't be a problem, but I did that 2 nights in a row at PT and my knee (actually the back side of the knee) is killing me!!!

I have a recumbent bike at home that I haven't used for awhile for just that reason. You might remember that I was getting on the bike at home several months ago, and one night I went about 5 minutes longer than I usually do, and it crippled me. That was the beginning of the end with my knee.

But she only put me on for 10 minutes and I thought I'd do ok. Do you think it's partially because of all the bone spurs/arthritis that I have in my knee? I'm going to have to tell her I can't do that anymore.......

Hi Beth I went thru the back of the knee pain. No its not fun . There are a few threads about that I believe. Im sorry your going thru that. I sure hope it gets better soon......Sorry about your neck as well thats all you need rightnow. You will be in my prayers

Interestingly, I got into conversation with my chiropractor about gym machines and the recumbent bike was mentioned. He said he didn't much care for them and usually advised people against them as they seemed to put undue stress on the lower back which, in turn, would cause spasm in the muscles in the back of the thigh (which end in the knee area).

It
really does not matter what the reason is---if a machine does not work for you then skip it. Maybe a regular bike would be better---I have never used a recumbent bike--they do not look comfortable to me and I don't think you get a good workout with them.

For non weightbearing in the gym, I use the stationery bike or a rowing machine. I like the rowing machine because it is also an upper body workout.

I always wanted to use the rowing machine ... looks like fun. And I used to use one when I belonged to a gym in 94! But cannot use one now as it wracks my lower back and is no fun anymore!

I had a recumbent bike, but it made my sciatica so bad that my foot would go numb while riding it and I had pain down my leg all night. My upright exercise bike doesn't cause more sciatica pain (but isn't quite as comfy to sit on). I think the upright would be easier to get on and off after surgery.

Just wondering if anyone has had success with this item: Standard Peddler. It looks like it might work yet be very affordable for at home.

Rose

I used that exact model until I was comfortable using a regular bike. I think it helped alot and it was convenient.

I passed mine on to another bonesmart person

Thanks Simon,

I was looking for something to use at home while I'm recooping. Enjoy using the bikes at the gym, but after this next surgery I'll be homebound for awhile and didn't want to loose that benefit or have to pay a fortune for one I probably won't use forever. I do have an eliptical and weight machine, but not a bike. Neither of them help with the stiffness like a bike does. Thanks.

Rosa,
My PT had me using that at first. Loved It!!!!

Another thought...you might be too close or too far from the pedals. If I am not in the right spot...I hurt
