I wondered if there is a database where I can look up a number from a "ball" removed 18 years ago to see who the manufacturer is.

Not sure about the manufacturer database, but your medical records maybe?
I got mine from the surgery and all the info on each part is there.

both hospitals have apparently purged my records. I have the "ball" that was removed 18 years ago and it has a number on it and some sort of logo but didn't know who manufactured it. I thought this may help me know who manufactured the femoral part which is about to be replaced.

How about a photograph of the logo and number? I might be able to id it for you.

I tried to photograph it but it's on the stainless steel cup and it will not photograph. The numbers are c-c 3E-185 with a logo in front of that - some sort of symbol could be SS or FF maybe?. Hope this helps. I am just trying to determine what this is because it was inserted at the same time as my original femoral part which is about to be replaced after 25 years. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Try using a back marker over it and wiping off the excess. The marker should then be left in the indentations and make it show up.

From what you've described it looks like the catalogue number for the implant and the SS is for Stainless Steel which just means it's the surgical variety ENJ58 stainless steel.

Has your hip been xrayed? Do you have a copy or can you get a copy of that? You could photograph that. A prosthesis can often be ID from the xray.

Are you hoping to get the same implant or something? If it's being replaced, then I would imagine that after all this time, they'll replace the whole thing. Of course it depends why it's being redone - is it for loosening or wear?

The femoral part is loosened and will be replaced on Oct. 8th. I just wanted to know how to tell what company made the parts that I have.

That's what I guessed! I would too - pity I can't see it or the xray as there's a good chance I might be able to id it for you.

I have the xrays on CD is there an email that I could send them to? I am also going to try to use the black marker as you said and try to get a picture.
