Since my first LTKR in Aug '07 I have found that shoes with almost any heel height cause knee pain. This trend "seems" to be continuing since my new LTKR on Feb 9, '09.

Is this something I will just have to get used to? Can we never wear boots or shoes with a heel of any consequence ever again? Are we forever consigned to the world of tennis/sport shoes? Or can I look forward to wearing boots with moderate heel height when my rehab is complete?

Thanks,
-TC

I have worn broken link removed: https://www.onlineshoes.com/search_results.asp?searchstring=merrell+breeze&gen=w&adtrack=gaw&term=merrell+breeze with a minimal heel. I even wore these during recovery in rehab and the PT thought they were great. I do wear a custom orthotic insert in my shoes at all times as I have a bunion and hammer toe issue.
I have 4 pairs; Black, Navy, Khaki, and Tan Linen.
I also have a pair of them for winter wear.
Since I require an insert it is necessary for the shoes themselves to have removable inserts.
Sorry I could not be of more help.
Best,
Crystal

Really can't help you as I have not been able to wear shoes with any heel for more than 30 years due to the knees. I wore loafers or oxfords to work and now just live in tennis shoes.

Others on the site seem to be able to wear shoes with heels.

I actually asked my Physiotherapist last week if I would ever be able to wear heels again. "Of course you will" I was told, as long as I didn't want to wear 5" ones there would be no problem if I did it gradually.

I think I asked that same question about wearing at least small (1 or 2") heels a month or so ago here and the conclusion from what everyone wrote was that you absolutely can wear them! One or two people said they wore 2" heels to go back to work a couple of months after TKR. I then asked the nurse at the 6 week check up and she said go to it! She said you can't hurt the implant. I have bad feet which I think may be more the problem than the new knee but I am going to start experimenting with some of my old shoes with 1 or 2" relatively wide heels -- wearing them out to dinner etc where I won't have to walk too much.(we have to drive everywhere in suburban NJ) I wouldn't want to try them first time at work or having to walk around the city....

It sounds encouraging. I had problems with boots on the last knee but the tibia crown was moving and there was pain many times with no shoes at all.

I'm hoping I'll have better luck with this new knee. I have several pairs of boots specifically modified for me to wear as I'm a right below knee amputee. Wearing boots takes special boots as well as a prosthetic leg with a special foot on it. It would be great to be able to wear them again. Most motorcycle riders wear boots as it is a safety issue.

Thank you for the info,
I'll keep y'all informed how it goes.

So far, 7 weeks post surgery, PT is going very well. Full extension and 90+ on the flex. Strength is getting better every day. I just have to remind myself that I'm only 7 weeks post.

Wow TC -- you've probably got more guts than any of us! If anyone can deal with all this it must be you with your experiences. But I'm thinking that prosthetic leg or no -- you would have the same issues we all have. Walking unevenly for some time with a bad knee and then have all your muscles et al relearn how to walk properly as your sterngth in the operated on leg and your placement improves. All of us have - to some extent - had pain as our bodies got used to the new knee and its effects. You might ask your PT if you haven't already but it seems logical. But at 7 weeks I wouldn't start experimenting with the boots yet :)

A quick update.
Now 4.5 months post surgery. Full extension and 115 degrees flex (most of the time). I've just finished PT and I'm very happy with this new knee. There are times when it is actually pain free when walking. It has been many years since I've been able to stand pain free.

Congratulations to you! You will most likely get even more ROM out of the knee in the next 4-5 months as well......
You will be amazed at how good you will feel.
My very best wishes to you on returning to doing things you were unable to do before surgery.

TC! You're a wonderful inspiration! You go, Girl!!! :)

Great news TC Im only 10 weeks so thanks for sharing, makes me feel better.....Keep up the good work.........

Not sure if you have tried to wear heels yet. But I just went in and measured my shoes. My sandals have a 1 1/2 inch heel and my dress shoes show a little over 2 inches. so I would say no problem.

Don't know how high you are talking about but would not think you would have a problem.

I wear the Clark brand. It is recommended by my orthpedic. They have some really nice styles. I would say the adverage price is around $70. for sandals and dress shoes a little higher.
