My friends daughter cut her finger (minor) but iced it, and iced it and iced it.....she ended up in excrutiating pain, not from the cut but from the almost frostbite, and the overly tight bandage,,,,the dr said that if she hadn't seen the dr she could have lost the finger....:shk:

Just a warning of the importance of icing but not of freezing, cold is one thing but not so cold that you burn yourself (or bite yourself)

The same applies to heat....you don't need it really hot in order to do its work...if its burning it is too hot.....

Rachel

I wasn't sure what thread to put this in as its not a social thread....but it applies to both knees and hips....

Well, lesson one is that digits (fingers and toes) should never be iced. There's insufficient mass to withstand the cold and the entire digit ends up being frozen.

Cold water by all means, even slightly iced water but never ice. And fresh ice packs should never be applied directly to the skin anywhere, only over a cotton cloth or tea towel, even a pillow case is better than nothing. Only when it's begun to lose the intensity of cold can it be applied to the skin.

This warning would also be appropriate to forearms and lower legs where the body mass is small.

Tight bandages on any digit or limb are also a no-no. It stops the circulation which is one bad thing but to then apply ice means there is no warm blood to counter it. She was an extremely lucky lass.

Thanks for the warning, good info.
