Back in the olden days (okay, four years ago), I walked four miles a day. Every day. Rain, shine, snow, hot, cold. Didn't matter- except of course, extreme cold. I went out in that one time, didn't make that same mistake again!
Anyway, four years ago, my thyroid went all wonky again (I've been on thyroid meds since I was 18, 39 now). The doctors at the VA hospital told me it was fine, did nothing to help, I lost energy, gained weight- all the classic "Hypothyroid symptoms". Enter a new VA doc, one medicine adjustment later and my energy came back (but, it took almost a year and sixty pounds gained).
Then, March 3, 2006, I slipped on the ice on my back deck and tore up my right knee (it was the 8th or 9th time in 20 years). Again, the VA did nothing to help. Instead of telling me they didn't cover ortho for me (spouse of a 100% disabled veteran), they just left me to deal with the pain and eventual break-down of my left knee.
So, long story slightly short- and told before in another thread- I had my left knee done on March 18th. I was hoping to be exercising by mid-May. But my MUA was done on April 27th. So, how about June? Nope... didn't happen either.
Today, I woke up on time and then played stupid questions over and over- what if it hurts? What if I fall? What if I get too far from home and can't get back? (I have a mobile phone, but still... I leave for my walk at 315 AM). Finally at 4 AM, I kicked myself in the bum and picked up my sneakers.
My dog, Gypsy (German Shepherd), immediately went to the door and sat down to wait on me (she remembers! Over three years and she remembers!). By the time I got my baseball cap on, she was doing the doggy-spin-dance by the door. I took my cane with me and off we went.
I didn't use the cane for the half-mile away from my house, but I used it for most of the half-mile back to my house. Gypsy was fantastic- I know I was walking slower than she would have liked, but she didn't pull on me. My house is a half mile from a petrol station and when I reached the car park of the station, I used the concrete barrier thingy to stretch my legs a bit, then headed back.
I'm tired, sweaty, slightly achy (but in that good "workout" kind of achy) and I'm happy! I know a mile isn't much, but its a bleedin' good start. I didn't think I'd be able to make it to the corner, so to get a whole mile has me pretty well chuffed!
