Ron,

Way to go! One day after surgery and you're already walking the halls, posting on the 'net, and stopping your pain meds! Amazing!

I thought I was being agressive when I dropped my meds after only a week and a half! :D Seriously though, l agree with Nancy and Don -- don't be a hero -- you need to stay ahead of your pain. If it starts to surface, don't hesitate to pop those pills for a little while longer.

So... are you feeling 'semi normal' yet??

semi normal yes a little fever has been a nuisance.believe me i made a major mistake not hitting the pda button soon enough after surgery took me hours to feel better. So first sign of pain im hitting the pills:)

good to hear your doing so well so soon looking forwards to the next update on your progress x

ok walked on a cane today and took the steps so off to home i go tommorrow!!! really only little bad thing is one legs an inch longer OT said it will resolve itself

Ron,

I had a problem with minor fevers (up to 101.5 deg.) for about a week after my surgery. Funny, it would usually only happen in the evenings, after dinner. The doc said it was just my body's normal reaction to being cut on, and that he wouldn't worry about it unless it went above 101.5 (it never did). They had me take Tylenol for it, and the problem went away after a week or so.

Glad to hear that you're being reasonable about the pain meds. I'm sure that you probably still need them at this point. I know that I was disappointed when the nurses told me they were taking away my morphine pump on day 2 following my surgery... :D. The twice-a-daily Oxycontin, and Percocet (when needed for break through pain) did a good job for me for the next week or so, then I was able to stop taking them both. I did go back on the Diclofenac (which I had taken for a couple of years before the surgery) at week 2 post-op at the advice of my OS, more for its blood thinning properties than for pain relief. I expect that he'll have me drop this, as well, at my 6 week post-op visit which is coming up in a couple of weeks.

If your operated leg is now an inch longer than the other (and assuming that it wasn't before), then I'm sure the OS probably did that for a good reason, but I would certainly be asking him for details as to why. My operated leg had become an inch SHORTER before my surgery, and they supposedly equaled the length when they installed the new joint. It sure felt longer to me as soon as I started walking on it, though. Now, four weeks later, the lengths feel almost the same. Don't know if the joint has actually been settling in a bit, or if I've just gotten used to the feeling of that left leg being an inch longer... :sct:

Overall, sounds like everything is going great! Glad to hear that you're going home. Keep us posted on your progress.

Good morning Ron!
Hope your doing well today. One thing you need to remember is when you take your pain meds PO..or by mouth, it's going to take those things 40 minutes to 1 hour to disolve into your system. I wish you would consider staying on them on a time regulated basis for a while yet. You dont need the agony of trying to play catch-up if that pain gets ahead of you! I'm really worried about this Ron. I just don't want you to suffer and hurt when there is no need to. Knee pain will really get your attention if you don't medicate properly. I promise your not going to get "hooked" or addicted in this amount of time if you follow doctors instructions and take your meds every 4 to 6 hours. You'll heal much faster if you body can concentrate on healing instead of fighting intense pain. I'm really cheering for you to have a fast recovery, but just use common sense. The shock your body has been through will take time to resolve. Let us hear from you often. I'm so proud of you that you are now on the other side, but please follow doctors orders and take your meds as prescribed.
Blessings to you~
Nancyo

Welcome Ron,
Thrilled you are doing so well:thmb::thmb:.
I lucked out on my first hip replacement. Got fussed at in the hospital because I wasn't using the pain pump enough; I just didn't need it. Same when I came home, never did need help with the pain as there just wasn't enough to bother me. Really lucked out.
However, with this surgery, I did not have a pain pump, just pills and I did and still have pain. Nothing major, but enough where I need the Percocet.
Good luck with your continued recovery; just don't overdo it.:wahey:

There ya go Ron...Gotta eat right....And on time...lol..I think you will do just fine...You have been doing great !!!!!!Just be careful....

hi all todays my release date i know everyone is different but any ballpark number on how much walking is sufficent in the beginning im thinking 4 blocks??? is that too little??

Whoa!!! Too much at FIRST,Ron!! You have to build UP to THAT!!! Please take it easy!!:sct:

Ron,

I agree with Judles. My first walk at home was a trip around our driveway with a walker. You can always walk more than once a day if you feel really strong. You have plenty of time to recover so you don't need to overdo it.

Take care.

Diane

Hi Ron,

I agree with Judles. Four blocks seems a bit aggressive at first. How far have you been walking in the hospital? I'd probably start with that distance and work up from there. If they're going to set you up with home PT, then I'm sure the therapist will give you guidelines on walking, as well.

Take care.

first day problems seems to resolve around spiking a fever a few times a day mostly after exertion anyone else experience that??

Yep I walked around the house..lol...Then the driveway.etc....Take it easy it will all come in time.....Yea!!! But your doing great...
