I used to be in really good physical shape for a long time (20 plus years of ballet) but over the last 2 years or so that's changed. I am now feeling like a complete blob, 65 years old but committed to being back in the best shape I can be for my surgery which will hopefully be around August 1st. I have a list and YouTube videos of the exercises I'll be doing pre-op, mainly quads, but the rest of my muscles have not been used enough and so I don't have any tone to my body. But it seems to me either Jamie or Jaycey might have given me some instructions, advice, maybe not but I am really desperate now very much wanting to get back into shape. I'm 5 feet 6 inches and up to 165 lb oh, totally unacceptable for me. Any thoughts, advice, threats or bribes?

@ACIM If you haven't been exercising for awhile it is important to start slow and build up gradually. Exercises may seem too simple. But you are asking muscles and tendons to work when they haven't for awhile.

You say you have videos for pre-op exercises. Are they similar to the Exercises for pre-surgery patients in this thread? Having strength in the areas addressed in this thread will really help you post op.

Unfortunately it is very hard to do many exercises with a sore knee. Are you able to walk any distance? We also have a thread on using a stationary bike for knee rehab. Would cycling be too painful for you?

Diana, your best bet is to work with the OneStep therapist on a program just for you. You've indicated a desire to take part in that program, but it looks like you haven't downloaded the app yet. Did you receive their welcome email? Be sure and check your spam and junk folders as it sometimes goes there. Remember that you didn't lose muscle tone overnight. It will take more time than you think to regain it again, but it is possible.

Can I please ask if you want to tag specific staff members for a response like you're doing, that you place the tags (no more than 3, please) at the end of your post? This makes for easier reading for our mobil phone members.

Jamie, happy to oblige with putting my tagged names at the end of my emails instead of at the beginning. And no, I have not received anything from one step therapist, or the app. However I did start swimming today and it was the most wonderful experience. I can't walk far at all anymore, purchased a cane today and have an appointment for a a surgical consult with a different Orthopedic replacement specialist here in Charleston. He is supposedly one of the top three in the area and I have heard a lot about him. Not feeling entirely comfortable with the other ortho that was going to do it.
@Jamie
@Jaycey- Yes, pre-op exercises are exactly the same as what BoneSmart is recommending. So I am now starting to limit my physical activity to bicycling and swimming. And of course, my pre-op prep favorite...the painful quadricep exercises
Again, thank you so much for the feedback. I never imagined I would be going through my V joint surgery with basically no one around to help me at all. BoneSmart has been so reassuring for me...

I'm sorry there was a problem with the email from OneStep. I'll get with them right away and have it resent. You should have it tomorrow.

I appreciate that Jamie. Thank you.

Riding a bike is a great exercise and excellent way to help weight control. I rode my bike until only a couple of months before surgery.

OneStep wrote me that you received the email this time but you decided not to participate in the program right now since your surgery has been delayed. I was sorry to hear that, as I think having the benefit of a therapist to guide you in the coming months plus the gait analysis in this program would be a benefit to you.

But you need to make the decision that works best for you. I don't know how long we'll have this arrangement with OneStep for our members to take advantage of the program and their therapists at no charge, but maybe down the road you might want to give it a try. If you decide you do, just let me know and I'll do my best to get you a slot in the program. In the meantime, good luck. Your plan for swimming and cycling may be easier for you since both are no impact exercise.

Odd, as I don't remember telling them that I did not want to participate. Yes, I would definitely like to do the program now rather than later, if possible. Thank you so much for the update Jamie. I look forward to hearing from them...

@Jamie

I apologize. I assumed that you had talked with OneStep.

Apparently your Android phone is not compatible with the app. So, unless you have a different phone you can use, it's not possible for you to participate. So sorry.....

If you can get a different phone to use, let me know and I'll see about getting you a slot.

Hi Jamie, This is Crescent Girl and I am trying to sign up for OneStep. They require a sign up code, do you know what that would be? Thanks for your help!

@Crescent Girl.....please see the Personal Message (PM) I sent to you. You need to be registered through BoneSmart before you can access the app.
