Yes that is right I fell right on my 8 month old knee. Last thursday night I hosted ladies night at my home, after every one left about midnight I was closing all the lights and bamm my left knee went out of joint. Ther was nothing I could do to stop the fall. It was in slow motion and watched as my right leg twisted and went right on the tile floor. It took me close to an hour to wake anyone up in the house. For some strange reason I had my cell on me I am calling the house number many times no one woke up, screamming my husband and kids names finally someone heard me. I had an appointment with my ortho friday morning. I told him what happened, he put me immedatly on strong antibiotics because I scraped up my knee. He took x-rays and the replaced joint looks ok. My left knee is in a brace to prevent it popping out again, he wanted to push up my surgery but I am heasitent because of I rather my kids be in school so my husband and I do not have to find child care when he is working.
I am back on pain pills again :( I have Dilaudid and Darvocet calling my name again.
Moral to my story is if you fall CALL your doctor right away!

Wow! That must have been scary. And not being able to rouse anyone - don't they have phones by their beds anywhere?

But glad it all turned out all right in the end. How are you now?

We all have phones next to our beds but my family sleeps thru everything, except for me. I am the lightest sleeper in the house. I am very sore and black and blue in many places still but still hanging in

Debi:

Oh my gosh! I am so sorry that you fell and that you had to wait so long for help! Ugh! Was it your artificial knee that collapsed or the knee that needs surgery?

I am so sorry to hear of the fall. Early in my recovery, I fell onto a concrete floor from one of those high bar stools....(no I wasn't at a bar). It scared me to death. These new knees are tougher than we think. I think that after going through so much with them we are hyper sensitive to any bumps, scratches or falls on them.
I would suggest, after you let your family out of the dog house, you get a boat air horn for such emergencies.

Sorry to hear about your fall. I fell over my 90 pound dog in the middle of the night at about 4 months or so. Scared me to death and I iced that knee like crazy. All was fine but I sat and cried for quite a while. Glad nothing was damaged other than some scrapes. Angels watching over us all the time.

Blessings,
Skeet

Sorry to hear this, glad you're OK.

I can relate to the "can't raise anybody" bit... Last winter I was working at ~3AM and needed something out of my car. I went out my front door and hit a patch of ice. My feet shot out from under me, and I flew off the steps, landing on my rear on the sidewalk.

Thing is, I smacked my head on the brick steps. I almost lost consciousness but don't think I did, however I did lay there for a while, trying to call for help, before I realized (1) noone was coming and (2) if I didn't get up I might freeze to death...

That really shook me -- if I'd knocked myself out I probably would have died from hypothermia before anyone found me. As it was, I was sore but not really hurt. I did learn a valuable lesson, though -- from then on if I need to go outside at night -- especially if it's cold -- I go out through the garage. No danger of ice there...

See, that's why I can't live in the north...I wouldn't know how to walk or drive. I've only seen ice once in Highland N.C. Yep, I busted my butt, crawled over to a bench, stood up, went to the car and went back to the condo...Very bruised pride.

One of the big disadvantages of living alone.

Some years ago I once had a really bad stomach bug. Had to get the doctor to call as I ended up with compulsive vomiting which had been going on nearly all day. Silly eejit gave me an intramuscular injection of
prochlorperazine (one tablet makes me sleep till doomsday!). It stopped the vomiting but when I woke, I felt nauseous again. Made my way to the bathroom then I realised that my nausea was due to a massive drop in blood pressure and I better get back to the lounge within reach of the phone in case anything happened.

Well, I got as far as the bathroom doorway and knew no more. I woke 40 minutes later laying in a perfect recovery position with a singing head which, upon exploration, proved to have a gash I could lay my finger in! Seems I as I had fallen, I hit my head on the sharp corner of the coving and also knocked myself out! I'd just lain there till I woke. Lucky thing was, apart from the way I landed, that the impact and the low blood pressure stopped the laceration bleeding. Had it not, I could have lain there and almost bled to death!

After a bit, I managed to crawl into the lounge and hit redial on the phone, getting through to the emergency centre who sent an ambulance. I ended up with 6 stitched in that cut!

Humerous point was the A&E staff's consternation when I asked for a vomit bowl. They put me on 10 minute obs for a head injury despite my repeatedly explaining I was vomiting BEFORE I had hit my head!

More I think about it, the more I realise I was lucky to survive that incident.

Don't want to talk about falling, hate the thought and the topic, even with my new knees it is still my worst fear. And I know that snow and ice a re just a heartbeat or two away. June, my fellow CTer. I'm sorry you fell and I'm glad you are essentially OK. I know you get me about the winter. Please be well soon and careful later. Pattipoo and Carolinagirl I think NC is calling us....

Jennifer,
Play it safe and come on down one state further where it is even warmer!!
I am a South Carolina girl, born and raised!!! I love our winters, it may get COLD, but snow is rare where I live in the middle of the state! In fact we get ice before we get snow.
When it does snow, it is usually after January!!! However like you even thinking about falling gives me goosebumps! I know I am gonna be EXTRA CAREFUL this winter!!!!!!!!

Well come a couple of more states south and ice outside of the freezer is pretty much a non issue.

Have family in all 3, NC, SC, & FLA. Been to both the Carolinas. As nice as they are inwinter, boy they are hot in Summer. And I've been told that FLA is just plain old muggy, period. Guess I'm a true yankee. No pleasing me. Someone call ref and fry up some..... hashbrowns!

You are so right about the heat. Been here all my life and I STILL can't get used to the summers. It gets so darned muggy!!!! My daddy was from Maine,
came down to Shaw AFB in 1942. He said the winters here were worse than those in Maine. He said in Maine it was just cold (52 below the night he was born up near the Canadian border) but down here it was not so much the cold as the dampness that came with it!!!!
Today it hit 100 degrees. When it's like that, it is like there is no air outside.
Time for a big ole glass of iced tea!!! Gonna have some grilled bratwerst(spelling) for dinner. Doug, I am still working on those ribs!!!!
Hashbrowns sounds good, may have to fix em for breakfast in the morning!
And a pot of grits! YUM, YUM,YUM.
Gosh, I do love southern cookin!!!!
I am gonna try to help hubby fix dinner,
so we can get ready to watch the season finale of Deadliest Catch!!
Hope ya'll have a good evening and may we all get some sleep!!!!

Hi there im so glad your ok that sounds so scarey you had to lay there so long. just wanted to tell you im glad your ok!

I too am gladyou are ok. Falling is my biggest concern as we get closer to the fall. In AK we can get ice in late Sept. Hopefully I will be permitted one of the coveted parking spaces this winter. I may have to bring in some cookies or brownies but it will be worth it not to walk across a snowy lot in the darkness.

Hang in there!
(And to all of those in the warm weather - It was a whopping 59 degrees here today - and RAIN - again- I think summer got lost on its way to Alaska this year!)

Marianne

Hey Marianne,
I've got a stupid question. When I lived in Key West, we didn't have heating in the naval housing complex. If there was an occasional cold front that made it that far and it dropped down into the 60's, my mom cut the oven on and opened the door.
Now the question. Do you all have air conditioners up there?

Marianne,
On the subject of Alaska, I may have already asked you this, but my son said during the first winter he was in Fairbanks that they could throw a cup of coffee in the air and it would freeze before it hit the ground.
True?
my guess is no a/c
I live in socal and my first house had no a/c, it was no problem. Open the windows at nite,it cools off the house. You don't feel warmth in the house until about 4pm, then a few hours and it cools off again.
