THR I’m so overwhelmed HELP

You betcha
Sleep well tonight!

@Nchiodo I do know that when you sleep with a pillow between your legs your spine is better aligned. But that should not cause a back ache. Have you purchased new shoes since your surgery? Wearing shoes with a pre-op wear pattern can cause all kinds of aches and pains. No need to toss every pair of shoes. But do replace your main walking shoes.

Hope this eases quickly!

Hi...6 weeks out...new niggles come and go as your body adjusts to this new hip.
I had alot of lower back pain prior to my BTHR and it was mostly resolved with my surgery, but sleeping on my side took quite some time with two hips at once.:oyvey:
Every since then I’ve been slowly sleeping back on my side with my operated leg on top and of course a pillow between my legs but every morning I wake up with a lower back ache. Never had this prior to surgery and we bought a new mattress a year ago. I don’t have a backache during the day or even with movement all day just when I get up. Oh. And when I was sleeping on my back for the first month I never had a backache. So what’s your thoughts.
My thoughts are that tightness comes with the territory on this recovery road.
When you sleep on your side, your legs curl and alot of sitting...the same
Hip flexors are shortened in this position and tight hip flexors can cause an anterior pull on our pelvis which hurts our lower back.
My PT suggested trying to sleep on my back to be properly aligned which I struggled with this as I was not a back sleeper.
As things improve, and you can do more rigorous stretches...before bed and after getting up, it will likely get better and better.
Just my opinion. But some of these aches just seem to come around and not be totally avoided.
Trial and error was the way I got through it...and a lot more back sleeping:groan:until it resolved fown the road.

Hello and Happy Tuesday!
As we all know, joint replacement surgery is invasive and a stress on the body. There is cutting and manipulation of bone and soft tissue...muscles, tendons, nerves. Before surgery in an effort to avoid pain we restrict certain movements decreasing the strength of some muscles, using them less on one side. As you become more mobile, muscle strength levels out, lessening strain on the lower back. My PA reminded me in one of my post op visits that as our hip deteriorates, our gait changes. After surgery, our gait changes once again. This recovery biz takes patience and time. You seem to be doing well, it’s still very early days and hopefully this issue resolves itself with time.
@Nchiodo

It’s been a moment since I’ve shared my adventure so here’s a update. I had my anterior THR on 9-1-20 so I’m just about 8 weeks post op. During the first 3 weeks I was totally depressed, overwhelmed, sad, and wondering why I even had the surgery. Oh I never had much pain so Tylenol and ice were my BFF. Well after my one month post op I was released from all restrictions and started off with a new outlook on life. I would still healing and did have a hematoma that was still visible but doc sUd it would eventually go away in its own which it did. Even though most restrictions were lifted I still was favoring my left side so much when I got out of a low chair using my cane I felt this immediate pain in my knee. ouch now what. So I iced it for a few weeks but still had this achy knee. Well went to a knee specialist and thoughts are meniscus tear. MRI on Tuesday to confirm. Can you believe that new hip is doing pretty good for 8 weeks but now this. Guess that’s what happens when you’ve favored the other side during those first few weeks after surgery. Oh and BTW cuz i was not doing much during the first 3 weeks but resting, icing, elevating and healing I gained 12lbs. Now I gotta work on that too. Golden years? I don’t think so yet. My parts are wearing out. Hahaha.

You’re doing great for not quite two months into recovery. Thanks for updating.
I wish you the best with your MRI on Tuesday. Please stay in touch and let us know what you hear.
Golden years? I don’t think so yet. My parts are wearing out.
At just a few years behind you age wise, I understand this! The saying “Growing Old Is Not For Sissies” comes to mind. But hey....growing old is better than the alternative, right?
Il take it, I’ll take it! :happydance:
Have a wonderful week!

The good part is that we can be put back together. I started my part replacements before you and they have helped me to regain joy and living. I am so thankful that the technology exists for us to be able to keep on living and enjoying. Have a peaceful day.

Hello again everyone!
I’m 8 weeks post op from my anterior right hip replacement. The last few days where my incision is up to the mid of the right buttocks feels like pulling and it’s a bit swollen on the outer side and also numb. It almost feels like arthritis in the bone of the pelvis. I felt better at 4 weeks then I do right now. To me it feels like a lot of stress is being put on the implant. Could I be bending to much or moving to much? I spoke to my OS asst today and he said they had to cut some sensory nerves during surgery. And now since I’ve become more active he feels there might be inflammation going on. What’s your thoughts. It’s like 3 steps forward 2 steps back. When do you stop worrying.

@Nchiodo, my surgery was a day after yours and so many things you mention are the same for me. My good leg is now worse than the fixed one..went to run an errand yesterday and my walking was pathetic..I could barely make it to do anything and had to go home. I have developed a bad case of the funk feeling I'm not doing as well as I should be. Seems like something new each week..like your incision. We will have to hang in there together and pray this gets better!

Hi @Carolinagirl54
I’m so glad to hear from you!!! I can’t believe I’m having this much discomfort thus far out. I’m sorry your dealing with issues also. I am part of your funk circle also. At times I think I’m going crazy. I feel I’m not progressing and going backwards. I’m laying here in bed and the pins and needle feeling in my leg is driving me nuts. That just started also in the last couple of days. Is this all normal?

@Nchiodo the pain you're feeling along the incision and part way up the buttock could be a bout of bursitis, specifically trochanteric bursitis. See if this sounds familiar.

Unfortunately we always seem to take one step forward and two steps back, especially in the first couple months. Definitely try to keep icing and often to help with the pain and inflammation.

@Nchiodo, yes those pains are normal. I had all those bad days, then felt better today..agree with Elf1 it's one step forward; two back. A person with little patience as myself has a hard time with this process.

Thanks for your support. Thus is really a crazy journey indeed. I’ve been icing and resting. Trying to not overdo it. I swear it feels like the implant is trying to escape.

Hang in there, dear Nchiodo.
You have months of healing to go and brighter days ahead.
Wishing you comfort, a good week and a Happy Two Month Anniversary!
@Nchiodo

Nchiodo, just curious if you are still suffering from RLS,to go along with your other sensations. I am a lifelong sufferer of RLS ,and quite honestly it’s the most frustrating thing I deal with after these surgeries. If you notice my biography you can see I am bionic 2 knees and 2 hips the latest 6 weeks old. The different pains come and go and seem to move around, so most everything you are describing seems pretty normal. If you are not a long term sufferer from RLS consider yourself lucky because in time everything you are feeling will go away and you won’t even think about your hip. I pretty much forget about my knees which are 1.5 and 2 years old, as they feel like normal knees before I ever had problems. There will always be a little reminder that pops up like when I get down on my knees they let me know they are not original, but not in a bad way. Hang in there it will get better, just not always in a day to day basis.

Hi Softail
Thanks for your response. You truly are Bionic!! LOL. The RLS does come and go. It sucks. Today I just schedule my surgery to repair my torn meniscus. It’s not that major of a surgery like my hip I just can’t wait for this year to be over. 2020 SUCKS. My 8 week post op hip still feels at times like my implant is trying to escape. It pulls and feels like tearing. It’s really journey isn’t it.

Hello all!! Well it’s now 11 weeks post op on my THR. I must say it is totally a long process. My one main struggle is the morning when I get out of bed I am so bent over with a major backache that lasts about an hour or so after moving. Does this ever get better and if when.

Hi @Nchiodo
Sorry you are still struggling...as you say, it really is a journey. I was wondering if you have another post op appointment scheduled to address some of these issues, as I had one at 3 months.
Of course, my recovery was pre-covid, and this virus certainly makes things more complicated.:oyvey:

My one main struggle is the morning when I get out of bed I am so bent over with a major backache that lasts about an hour or so after moving.
I had problems with my lower back prior to hip replacement, and though it has mostly now, except when I do too much at my very physical job...at 3 months it bothered me alot.
I went to physical therapy where it was determined I had extremely tight hip flexors which can certainly cause lower back pain and stiffness especially after sitting too much or laying for a long time.
A series of approved stretches and gentle exercises really helped.
Don't know if perhaps you could check with your OS and see if he thinks this might be contributing to your back pain.
i know you also said you have a bad knee, so my guess is that your activity is no doubt limited. You want to be able to do these stretches safely but it, once again, is a process and hopefully once you are able to get more active it will be less problematic.
